Sure there are. The hippies manage to keep themselves "alive" and semi functional on a diet of bean curd and wheatgrass. I would call those alternatives to food.

I finally got a cellular phone this past Summer. First thing I did was call upstairs to my wife. It was free because both our phones are on the same plan or something.

I'm still undecided. I don't think the American Dream is dead, or a myth, I'm just not sure it's worth pursuing. I hear it's all taxed to shit now.
