Re: Poverty in the USA

No, not everyone here for that reason....and you're still paying the same taxes, to cover the same kind of stuff, but just not the ability to claim it yourself....

Re: Poverty in the USA

Folks aren't much better off being on benefits, but if you're going to be penalised heavily to get a job there does seem little point.

You get part time job that puts you over the threshold which...

Re: Poverty in the USA

In a way, I agree, but then again, even though the new rates are high, you only end up paying a percentage of your salary above a threshold after you graduate and if you don't earn enough, you defer...

Re: Poverty in the USA

It was the minging milk that had been festering around on the window sill so it was tepid and slightly off, during the summer that I didn't like it

Re: Poverty in the USA

It's that tin hat, mistrust of the government I find puzzling.

The roads getting built, the police, army, fire service, libraries, etc, etc, etc are all government controlled.

Politicians...

Re: Poverty in the USA

The real reason people hate Thatcher, because she took away our school milk :D

Oh and she introduced the Poll tax, which household owners loved, but tenants, especially students didn't

Re: Poverty in the USA

It's so regional though. Food where I am is massively not cheaper than in the UK. Some seasonal things like local fruit in the summer are, but the majority isn't.

That $1 box of pasta in Walmart...

Re: Poverty in the USA

Hmmm.

How demoralising is it to have to resort to a food pantry though? And our local one asks you to prove you have a household income under a certain amount to get any food....so if some poor...

Re: Poverty in the USA

You're under the misconception that people aren't paying the same taxes in the US, but are unable to use the services.

Also, healthcare as a tax comes out as a percentage, so someone not earning...

They tend to have free general admission, but charge for specific special events, which is fair enough in my opinion.

Re: Poverty in the USA

A lot of the museums around here are private though, so aren't free...but they do offer a free Thursday, or whatever a month, usually the first or third of the month and I know there was some charity...

Re: Poverty in the USA

Don't get me started on how much it costs to take kids anywhere, $15-25 entry for a kid over a year old. That's mental.

We use the library museum passes like crazy and it's still pretty expensive....

Re: Poverty in the USA

Big difference, a lot of those chain places like McD's are corporate owned in Boston, so they do come with holiday allowances etc. Out in the burbs they are franchise owned, our local one provides...

Re: Poverty in the USA

You need to get out a little. Leave your little cozy bubble at home for a minute.

Poverty is massive in the US. The lower end of things is much worse here.

People go where the jobs are, if...

Re: Poverty in the USA

Big difference being medical insurance....if you're working all hours on minimum wage you'd be earning enough to not get childcare/housing/medical help, which means most of your money is gone before...

Re: Poverty in the USA

It's shit though...it doesn't help vast chunks of people who are poor and/or struggling, as the income thresholds to qualify are so low that when most people are there, they're already seriously up...

Re: Poverty in the USA

If you're...
