Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

But I'm a Yank who married a Brit, Silly Sod. I've been here almost eight years, and have made next to no friends because a) I'm a freelance editor who works from home and never meets anyone, and b)...

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

Frrussre and fatbrit:

Many Brits hang out on the American expat sites. I can understand it if they have a partner or close friend who's American, but that's usually not the case--it's simple...

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

For example, how could anyone other than a two-year-old find being called a "silly cow" or a "silly moo" insulting, unless he or she was retarded?

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

I'm up for Yankee-baiting if you don't mind some Brit-bashing. :)

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

SillySod, I'm sorry about your experience, but it's been my experience in Britain that if an autumn leaf has the AUDACITY to fall on a rail line, everything will come to a screeching halt. :D

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

Actually, in all the time I lived in and visited Pensacola (incidentally, one of the prettiest beaches on the planet), no one ever got attacked by a shark. Riptides after a storm were the big threat....

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

This is meant ONLY half-jokingly:

TRY being a f--king American one day. You know the rest of the world can't stand you for starting a war in Iraq. You might have even been militantly against that...

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

How is the United States behind India (would you like a mint, or perhaps a nice curry?)? People jump on the U.S. about its carbon emissions, but conveniently overlook India and China, for fear of...

Re: Led Zep to Headline 'Bonnaroo' Festival in USA

I'm American and 42. I have four older brothers and one younger brother. (I'm the only female.) I used to have my room plastered in Zep posters, but shortly before they were due to play in D.C.,...

Re: Homesick and depressed...

In the eight years I (American) have lived here, what's killed/depressed me the most is just how misguided people are about most Americans. It's a lonely life here.

We're not all gun-toting,...

Re: anyone else have problems adjusting??

I saw this and just thought I'd give you an American in England's viewpoint.

1. Forget about openly speaking your mind to someone who's offended you or with whom you disagree.--you'll just be...

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

Tartak9,

I agree that this election is going to determine more than anyone could originally conceive as far as worldwide peace, disease, and hunger goes. Everyone looks to the United States for...

Re: Explanation of the Primaries please.

ugacrew, I'm originally from Pensacola, Fla., but then my parents moved to the D.C. area when I was 10. I love both areas, but I'd rather live in Pensacola (England just doesn't cut it with...

Re: The girlfriend angle

I guess both Brits and Americans can say there are things they love and hate about both countries. I was introduced to Monty Python when I was 10, and thought they were hilarious. I always thought...

Re: The girlfriend angle

For some reason, we seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot, Elvira. There are several Brits on UK-Yankee, as there also are on the American Expats site. No one complains. So what's wrong with an...

Re: The girlfriend angle

Elvira, I lived in the States for 35 years, and have lived in England for eight years. I thought that was clear. So of COURSE I've lived abroad, and anyone who's lived in both countries knows how...

Re: Homesick and depressed...

Perhaps, before you throw in the towel, you could try living on the East Coast. People aren't spread as far apart there, and it's easier to make friends. Just so you know you aren't alone: I...

Re: The girlfriend angle

Look at the cost of living and general state of the U.K., and THEN have the nerve to call me an imbecile. Are you living under a rock?

Re: The girlfriend angle

Elvira, I agree that the amount of U.S. vacation time sucks (but that's why the U.S. is now the only world superpower). I'd love to have had six weeks off at least per year, and all of the holiday...
