Re: Any Brits in San Antonio, Tx

Not exactly close by, but a 4 hour drive South. :)

There was a thread about San Antonio a couple of years ago I think, turns out there were quite a few expats in the area so you might want to...

Re: Going to university as a mature student

Thanks Sue that's really helpful. Yes I do have GCSEs, 8 of them I think, in all the usual subjects. I don't have the certificates but my Mum's a hoarder so I would bet she has them stashed away in...

Re: Going to university as a mature student

Thanks for the reply md. I guess for most people a lucrative career is the main aim but since I am currently fairly comfortable I thought I'd choose something I find personally interesting...have no...

Going to university as a mature student

I am 31 years old, a permanent resident in US and self-employed. Did not go into further education back in the UK as frankly I was a feckless waster at that age but as I get older it interests me...

Never once blocked a toilet in the UK, done it about 20 times in 5 years since moving here! :o

Re: Romney's Tax Return

I don't think that's true actually, you might know it and a lot of other well-informed people might know it but I think a huge amount of people on mid-to-low incomes will be surprised to see it laid...

Re: Romney's Tax Return

Personally, I think it's wrong that he gets huge tax breaks for choosing to give money to the Mormon church. Churches should not get the same priveleges as genuine charities. Amazing racket they...

Re: 2012 Winter Weather - Bitching Session

:D

It got down to 58 yesterday when I took my morning walk round the park at 7am. There I was in shorts & T-shirt while all the locals were wearing huge coats and gloves. Any excuse to get the...

Re: Living in the UK in summer, but overseas the rest of the year?

Thanks Jerseygirl. This sounds (rather predictably in hindsight) like it's a lot more hassle than I had considered!

Just to clarify, we tend to visit family in England once a year but stay with my...

Living in the UK in summer, but overseas the rest of the year?

Hi, we are thinking of buying an apartment in the UK to stay in each summer (we live in USA and the kids get long summer holidays).

Does anyone have any experience of owning an overseas property...

Re: Buying a holiday home back in the UK

Thanks Ian that's great. One further question, if we decide to leave it empty most of the year, do we still have to pay Council Tax on that property? Or is there a minimum number of days you must...

Buying a holiday home back in the UK

Hello,

We are thinking of buying a flat back in the UK as we tend to visit every summer and are fed up of staying with my parents.

Could someone please tell me:

1) If we rent out the...

Re: Any Brits in South Texas - McAllen, Corpus or SA

Hello FreckleUK, I've been in McAllen since 2007. Hope you are feeling a bit more settled than you were in January? Will be happy to meet up for a coffee or beer or whatever. Sorry for the late...

Inbetweeners Movie

This is released today in USA, supposedly. Anyone know where it's showing? Probably not here in South Texas  but would not mind seeing it as part of a weekend away somewhere.

Strangely...

Re: Moving to Spain for one year, with children?

Thanks for the advice everyone. My wife is a Mexican-American so she is fluent in Spanish and the driving test shouldn't be a problem. My Spanish isn't great but I can get by, and will no doubt...

Property prices in Costa Rica

Hello there,

We are currently looking into spending 12 months living in either Spain or Costa Rica. I've been doing some googling for property rental sites and what has surprised me is that Costa...

Re: Moving to Spain for one year, with children?

So is the same true in reverse? If we moved to Spain and took our tests there, those licences would then be valid if/when we moved onto the UK?

Just thinking it might be easier taking it in Spain...

Re: Moving to Spain for one year, with children?

Thanks very much for all the advice so far.

I just thought of another question. My wife and I both have US driving licences. I have never passed my test in the UK.

Would we need to obtain a...

Hello everyone,

Firstly sorry if this sort of thing is asked on a regular basis, it's hard for me to find the answer to our specific question without sifting through thousands of threads so it is...

Re: Teaching Creationism

"Rival theories" is stretching it a bit though isn't it? From a science perspective there's almost no chance Creationism can be correct (unless the Creator also decided to create loads of...

Re: Which State Would You Live In Given The Choice?

Hard to know what it's like living somewhere until you actually live there, but I did like the look of Colorado when we visited. A real 'outdoors' culture and the lowest rate of obesity in the...
