Re: British passports for US-based kids

That makes sense, thanks. My biggest concern is confirming their citizenship - my elder son has a British birth certificate, but my youngest does not. What I couldn't find was information regarding...

British passports for US-based kids

So, background:
I am a British citizen with permanent resident status, living in the US for the last six years.

My wife is a US citizen with indefinite leave to remain in the UK, who lived with...

Re: USA employers and British work experience and references

The biggest problem I had with finding a job in America wasn't that they didn't check my British references or anything similar, it was that so many places required applications to be done through...

Re: Go ahead - Drink and drive

I guess it's just me, then. I just find the idea of directly linking drinking alcohol with driving in that way seems to send out the wrong message. If you go and buy it at a grocery store...yes,...

Re: Go ahead - Drink and drive

A drive-through 'beverage centre' ie drink shop. Drive up, buy a case of beer, drive out. It really doesn't seem to send the desired 'don't drink and drive!' message.

Re: Go ahead - Drink and drive

I'd suggest that is IS at least somewhat socially acceptable, as evidenced by drive-through off-licences. There seems to be much more of a link between alcohol and cars here than I was used to in...

Re: Beowulf - the movie

I'm going tomorrow with a group of friends from work - one of whom speaks fluent Anglo-Saxon and knows the original poem by heart :)

Re: QUick Trial and hang this mother

You read the story, maybe?

'A bit gruesome' is what happened to the child who was betrayed by those who were supposed to love her. Anything that happens to the parents is called 'colourful'...

Re: QUick Trial and hang this mother

Come on, they lost their daughter, surely they've suffered enough!!

Yeah, right...those who say that capital punishment is only about revenge? Well, that child deserves revenge, and her sister...

Re: Are Americans more productive than Europeans?

That's one thing I love about my current job - productivity is measured. The main requirement for getting a regular bonus is logging AT LEAST 4.5 hours per day of billable support for customers. ...

Re: What can Brits learn from Americans?

How to push for what you want is a good one. Beyond that...well, most of what I've learned here isn't in any way endemic to America. That people are people wherever you go is the main one.

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

Anyone else note the irony of saying "Look, MY country's better than yours, because WE don't say our country's better than yours all the time"?

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

Yes, I am. I hate the whole 'OUR country is better than YOURS!' game, and I especially hate being on the same 'side' as someone who seems relentlessly determined to piss everyone off but...well, the...

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

After the fact, Britain was left with a shattered economy, a ruined infrastructure, and a series of betrayals by her allies.

The US halted the lend-lease program to Britain as soon as the war was...

Yeah, whenever they get obnoxious about it, I say that they won because Britain was too busy fighting against a murderous dictator to be able to suppress a bunch of terrorists on the other side of an...

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

I dunno...Star Wars is reasonably accurate in places, but they completely left out the extinction of the Ewoks, didn't they? I guess they wanted a happy ending rather than finishing on such a...

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

Dambusters is reasonably accurate...some exaggeration, of course, and they don't go into the actual practical effect of the raids, but other than that it's reasonable enough.

But it's true that...

Re: Americans and their Revolution...

'Abuse' was probably a poor choice of word...there's generally nothing that malicious about it, but it gets very wearing to hear the same 'jokes' so often. Most people eventually get the clue when I...

Re: woohoo.....Tesco's is coming to USA

No, of course it's not going to be Tesco, any more than Asda turned into Wal-Mart when it was taken over. But I'm holding out at least a little hope that eventually they may sell a bit more in the...
