Re: Half a million dollars. . . . REALLY !!

It's closer to 19 miles!

We use a very good cattery/kennel just up the road. 10 years ago it was a purely rural area. Now the surrounding fields are filled with new housing, each section too...

Re: Where can you search for sold property prices?

Had a look at our house, and the valuation seems spot on, pretty much what we figured on, and same range as our estate agent and a property valuer quoted. Most of our neighboring properties also...

Re: Temporary relocation to Auckland for 2 years

Wow. You just said I'm not credible. That's rude. It's not hearsay to me. I tell it like I see it, and I did qualify it by saying it might be a result of the particular area I was familiar with. ...

Re: Temporary relocation to Auckland for 2 years

I am a credible source. I go to auctions throughout the year when I'm able to keep an eye on the market. I would say, nearly every house that sold, was sold to either a family of Chinese origin (NZ...

Re: What is considered an optionally extra for housing

Neither our insulation man, nor our builder refused what we asked them. I meant the insulation man was trying to tell us we were making a mistake (if rather aggressively), but he did as we asked, as...

Re: What is considered an optionally extra for housing

Kiwis aren't known for their "she'll be right" attitude for nothing!

A few months ago Duncan Garner, a TV presenter on a local current affairs program mentioned, during a segment on the problem of...

Re: What is considered an optionally extra for housing

Only homes built in the last few years will have double-glazed windows, but not all windows are created equal, and the requirements vary from region to region.

According to the building code,...

Re: Housing and mental health

Hi Angeshirl,
I read some of your earlier posts and presume you rent out in west Auckland? If you extend your search to South Auckland, you can find small houses well within your budget, with the...

Re: affordable rental/buying areas outgside auckland

Hi,
I don't think you'll find anything in a "nice" area for that price.

You might find a unit, or a 3-4 bed house in what's considered an undesirable area (for expats, at least), but even in...

Re: Great drives around the auckland/waikato area

Hi, one of my favourites is a drive to the Manukau Heads lighthouse on the Awhitu peninsula. You will see some really splendid views:

Re: Fantastic advertising for Foreigners wanting to come to New Zealand

Another consideration: My Kiwi family have more than their fair share of racist attitudes, which they freely indulge in with great pleasure. And they're Cantabrians.

Re: I don't know what to do, thinking out loud - online

I think better materials are becoming easier to find. When we renovated back in 2011, double glazed aluminium windows with insulation in the frames were hardly known. Now you occasionally hear...

Re: I don't know what to do, thinking out loud - online

Hi,
What about buying land in an "unfashionable" suburb, but still within 20 km of the city? Houses may be horrendously expensive, but an empty section may be affordable as an investment. Your...

Re: Family moving to Auckland looking for good areas to rent near Manurewa

Howick is either a ward with several suburbs or a small suburb by the sea, so depends where in Howick you mean. Same for Manurewa, which has several suburbs within the larger designation. Howick...

Re: Family moving to Auckland looking for good areas to rent near Manurewa

Commuting to Manurewa to Howick for school might be on primary road, but a half hour commute without traffic twice a day doesn't sound so easy to me.

Re: Family moving to Auckland looking for good areas to rent near Manurewa

If you live in Manurewa, the drive to Howick College would be about half an hour in the morning, a bit longer in the afternoon.

I don't think the Clevedon, Brookby, Whitford area has many rentals...

Re: PVCu Double glazing

I don't believe double-glazing is a requirement in the housing code, at least not in the North Island and possibly all of New Zealand. Our builder told us back in 2011 that in the Auckland region...

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

I wasn't trying to compare the US to NZ specifically. My point is you'll find the same societal problems in NZ as elsewhere.

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

Hi, we're moving to where my family live, on the east coast of the US. Not our first choice of preference, but that's where family are. The cost of living there is quite affordable compared to New...

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

Although Auckland specifically and New Zealand in general are quite expensive places to live, the cost of living is not why we're leaving. In fact, it's not a factor, apart from resenting paying so...

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

Hello,
I would do as much research as possible, it can't hurt and it can certainly give you a better idea of what to expect. I wouldn't ignore any comments, especially if they're given by Kiws...

Re: Mangere in Auckland - what's it like living there?

Let's see - health facilities in Mangere - Middlemore Hospital and its clinics. Sub par? Then you think medical care in New Zealand is sub par.

Job prospects? How many people work a few...

Re: Mangere in Auckland - what's it like living there?

To join in the spirit of frankness, I would say I agree with you Bo, except I would substitute just about any place in New Zealand for "Mangere", if I factor in all aspects of living the good life. ...

Re: Mangere in Auckland - what's it like living there?

I only mentioned Brown's Bay because *you* used it as an example. It's certainly expensive compared to Mangere.

You misunderstood. I meant that Mangere is no worse than many areas,...
