Re: Moving Back the UK

Having returned to the UK with literally (well, actually) reams of medical paperwork - nothing serious, but reams of it. I went through it all and took the 'important' bits along to my GPs surgery...

Re: Social Security in the current climate

Wow... okay our expectations were somewhat low - particularly since I had contacted the FBU a couple of times and only got the automated response acknowledging the enquiry form submission. My wife,...

Re: FBAR and 8938 - Amendment Needed for Missing Account?

Oh, and BTW, for some reason we had issues with our FBARS this year: first, acrobat reader (latest version) would not open the FBAR PDF - so had to use an old version of acrobat pro (license had run...

Re: FBAR and 8938 - Amendment Needed for Missing Account?

Time for the annual '8938' question (!):

Having fretted about reporting our pensions on our FBARS, we did so last year, although we now find out with more digging that defined benefit schemes may...

Re: The FBU in London is working again

My wife, after going around in circles trying to register on ID.me (which seems not possible with a non-US address!), filled in the online form with the FBU, stating that she wanted to start the...

Re: Non UK resident driving your own car

The insurers were fully aware of our situation - and we double checked that the policy details were correct and reflected our situation.

Re: Shipping back to uk

We moved back to the UK from the US east coast back in May. We used bluemove - after getting a number of quotes and different options. Total cost was $10k for a 20' container door to door. Total ship...

Re: Non UK resident driving your own car

Towards the end of Covid when the car rental prices were sky-high we purchased a car in the UK to use instead of renting. We still had our UK licences and a UK address - which probably made things...

Re: Moved from the US and needing advice on filling in forms

Since I've leaving the US soon I'm just dipping my toes into the murky tax waters:

i) I'm a GC holder (along with my wife), leaving the US before the end of November 2025. I'm planning on revoking...

Re: Green Card Holder - Planning to move back to the UK -> Admin and Legal check

(a bit late...) surely it's not how much you have earned, it's your tax liability - i.e. how much you have paid in tax. So you might have an income of $200k and pay $50k in tax - so your tax...

Re: Shipping belongings to U.K

Just moved our stuff back - 20' container $11k full service US-UK (Baltimore-Southampton). Took 21 days (due to rescheduling of the ship having it sat outside Southampton for 6 days!).

Re: Transfer of Residence process (back to the UK)

We've just sent all our household items back. The TOR listing should be 'comprehensive' - but as others have noted, it would be impossible to list absolutely everything, and in the information with...

Re: Mum' Will - Tax Implications if Daughter Under 18

Maybe not directly relevant to your particular case, but from personal experience avoid trusts like the plague! My mum (in UK) died a couple of years ago and had a couple of trusts (which thankfully...

Re: Recommendations Moving Money

We just moved a chunk of money back to the UK from the US. We compared Wise, OFX and our local bank - and while our local bank was fractionally more expensive we went with them since it was a direct...

Re: Car in UK

Yes, that's with our US license, although our two daughters are also on the policy - who have UK licenses. I think (don't quote me on this!) it's with esure - there aren't too many who will take it...

Re: SSA Reform Act Of 2025 - Beware Expats

Much depends on how you interpret how far the 'legally and appropriately' is taken. 'Appropriately' is somewhat subjective. More importantly, he seems to be fixated on (losing) votes - clearly non US...

Re: Car in UK

We had a similar conundrum - spending about 2-3 months a year in the UK - albeit across a number of stays.
At the end of Covid the car rental prices were just silly so we bought a car. We have a UK...

Re: SSA Reform Act Of 2025 - Beware Expats

Thanks for the heads-up. While some might say it has no chance of passing, they said similar things about WEP being rescinded. Of course, in the current climate, it might be short-circuited anyway...

Re: Social Security in the current climate

If I try to login using my login.gov it takes me to a 'verification page' which gets me to fill in all my details (which it has) - after which it takes me to a page to say I already have an account -...

Still trying to sort out my login - range SSA - 60 min queue, so got a call-back - which happened 3 hours later (supposedly my position on the queue was kept). Anyway, lady at SSA was very nice -...

Re: UK to USA - moving company

Forget the electricals - e.g. TVs - since voltage (and 50 vs 60Hz) is different. Yes, you can get a transformer, but really not worth it.

Re: Moving back home to escape the craziness

Mood at NASA (where I work) has been terrible since T took office. Began with very thinly veiled threats - somewhat moderated now. True, DEI has gone, 'non-party' members removed. However, NASA does...
