I had the same thing - spoke to the insurer and they said I needed to be a resident of the UK for the duration of the policy... which I wasn't!

What we done was rent a car in Canada through a UK...

Most claims stay on your record for 5 years. 1 years no claims is better than 0 and will likely give you some sort of discount, but it may get balanced out by declaring your accident - hard choice!

We had very similar questions to you when we started looking into coming to Canada. We both had good jobs in the UK, comfortable, house, car etc, but felt that the world was far bigger than one...

We moved to Calgary back in April and bought an older 2009 VW Tiguan - Got insurance through Des Jardin direct (no broker) - they took into account all of our UK history and we pay $960 per year.
