Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

The way it typically works is you might start with 2 weeks, but if you are paid salary (not hourly) then with bigger companies you will probably start with 3 weeks. After usually 5 years you will...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Moses i would say you are correct. It is of great understanding that everything is expensive in Switzerland. I do not want to sound bitter, the country is beautiful. We get "sticker shock" over a lot...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

BristolUK I have lived in Switzerland now for 6 years and can certainly share with you in its natural beauty. Do I think it is "better" than Canada? Not at all. No two countries are identical....

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Jsmth321 I do see you are living out in Vancouver. I lived out there for 6 years and absolutely loved it (yes it rains a lot). Now a snow day in Vancouver would be an EXTREMELY rare event, wouldn't...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Yes, I agree with Moses on this one. Socially we are to blame if on a snow day (best memories as a child) there is no parent at home because we are all in the workplace. One thing about Switzerland...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

dbd33 let me come back on this one. Switzerland is indeed a beautiful tiny little country that can give you added convenience because everything is only 3-4 hours away max. BUT and this is a big one,...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Tumbling Dice i can appreciate and completely understand your point. The leave time is ridiculously low relative to U.K./European standards. I can only hope this improves over time but I guess I lean...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Yes EasyJet makes life easier to travel, I agree. I still can't believe how cheap flights can go for, especially when booked in advance. Still can't get any cheaper than a "Staycation" :p

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

I can share with you that living as an Expat is not easy. It is a constant question about when we should consider "moving back" as we want our boys to also experience and be culturally connected to...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

dbd33 you need to take the good with the bad with any Expat experience or move on. Living in Switzerland i sacrificed living in a two-story home with inground pool to live in a small flat with no...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Please, how factually incorrect can you get. Canada (like Britain) is rich with multi-culturalism. There are lots of festivities annually celebrating different heritages and authentic cuisines...

Yeah, that was my mistake. Like I was saying is the benefit period has increased to 1.5 years and most employers offer top-ups from the Government's 55%. I believe my last employer offered a...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Now cottaging is about leaving the hustle and bustle of the busy city behind...

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

I should add the Liberal Govt has increased the total leave to 18 months, which is impressive. It's true the Gov will pay something like 55% of pay but a good employer will offer top ups (ex....

Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

I can tell you that being a Canadian and having lived in Canada for over 30 years you do not notice the short annual leave. You are right that 2 weeks is a typical offer from small private companies...
