Re: Foreign Social Security Deposit - Arrived Today?

In my case, my bank denotes it as CITIBANK IRE FIN S so it looks like it's coming from an Irish account.

Re: Foreign Social Security Deposit - Arrived Today?

The money for our two deposits arrived on Friday (according to the balance in my account) but if they are date stamped on Tuesday they'll then go into next year's tax return!

Re: US mail forwarding service?

We got the USPS to forward it to a friend's address in the US and she packaged it up now and then posted the package to us in the UK. We paid the postage costs to the UK. There may be commercial...

Re: Offer of a move UK to US

Bear in mind that, since you won't have a credit rating, it will be very difficult to borrow money to pay for the things you need. Agree that you'll need two cars but other things will also surprise...

Verifying ID at SSA for WEP

There are probably people on this forum who have already been through the process and had their SSA benefit recalculated for WEP. If so, I have questions related to the verification of ID. I got the...

Re: Moving back to UK

You do not lose your SS if you return to the UK with Permanent Resident Status, nor do you lose it if you surrender the Permanent Resident Card. I returned in 2016, surrendered the I-551 in 2018 and...

Re: US Taxation Laws if Living in UK

That's interesting about the "85% of our SS is taxed". I've been declaring 100% of my SS to HMRC so have I been paying too much tax? Do you declare in your UK tax return that you are using the tax...

Re: US Pension Lump Sum Early Withdrawal

That's new or I didn't notice it in 2021. I had Schwab send the entire balance of my IRA to Wise and I then sent it on to my UK bank with no issues. I subsequently reported the transaction to the IRS...

Re: US Pension Lump Sum Early Withdrawal

"Do we report foreign income when we file our UK tax?" I was advised to do so I did. Added a note in the Any other information section of the return to HMRC to the effect that a lump sum payment of...

Re: US Pension Lump Sum Early Withdrawal

It's a question for which I took expensive advice from US/UK tax advisors in London. Their advice was summarized as follows
For the purposes of Article 17.2, "A lump-sum payment is defined in these...

Re: US Social Security Moving Back to UK

Yes, you can. We were told by the Federal Benefits Unit at the US Embassy in London that our entitlement to SSA retirement benefit was unchanged if we reside in the UK, whether we were a green card...

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

We moved back from the US to Northern Ireland, specifically Donaghadee and are very happy with the decision. Agree with the comments about local government and the health service but even with that...

Re: Green Card holder moving permanently back to the UK

You don't need to do anything about your green card immediately. I'd keep it until you are completely certain that you know what way your life is going to go - you could decide after you come back...

Re: Transferring 401K and IRA from US to Uk

Ahh sorry, misunderstood the question - I was talking about the mechanics of transferring money. On the taxation, I paid a London based US/UK tax accountant for some expensive advice about my own IRA...

Re: Transferring 401K and IRA from US to Uk

Have a look at Wise (or Transferwise as was). I've used them to transfer funds from the US back to the UK. You first wire the money to the US branch of Wise. Then transfer it to a $ account in the...

Re: NI driving license

That's good. Maybe it was a bit more complicated for me as I had to swap my English driving license (classed as a foreign driving license) for my old NI one again.

Re: NI driving license

It's a bit more than a phone call. You'll have to send them ID and proof of address and they have a backlog of applications to deal with but it was straightforward for me. I did it last year after...
