My husband has spoken to people in similar situations that did not go back to the US to apply, and were successful; so we think that 2016 answer might be wrong. At least we're hoping it is.

My husband's employment as a United States Forces relevant civilian employee will be coming to an end in January 2023. The plan is to try and switch to a spouse visa, applying from within the UK....

Good answer! Of course you're right. It just seems odd to me that there's a lot of discussion on here regarding federal tax filing, but next to nothing about state taxes.

That's great news, thanks! The British Consulate has been fantastic so far. My husband mailed his application on Saturday & received the visa on the following Friday.

That sounds like positive news (I think), but I've looked at my husband's visa stamp & it doesn't say Exempt (or Tier anything). It says, after type, "For employment with DOD" and further down...

I hadn't done any research, I just (stupidly) jumped to that conclusion based on posts I'd read on this website & the UK Yankee one, where people mentioned changing from a "work visa" to a spouse...
