Re: Savings money sending money between countries

Thanks - I thought I would be able to edit my original post to delete the referral link but I can't seem to see where I can do that. I'll let the mods just pull the post down. Sorry for the...

As I continue my research on logistics of managing my possible return to the UK I thought I'd share a money saving method of sending money to the UK (though this method should work between any two...

Re: Opportunity to move back to UK

Generally I've found Americans to be a lot more upbeat than the Brits, often when they have no reason to be. One of the things I'll need to prepare myself (and my wife who's not used to the negative...

Re: UK tax questions - what can I fill personal exemption with?

You're welcome, about time I returned some capital though I'm still in your debt! So on that note please allow me to dig a bit deeper on your statements above.

Re: UK tax questions - what can I fill personal exemption with?

Sharing a handy website I found for calculating UK tax. One thing it did clarify is that I can use dividends and interest to fill up my personal allowance as well as their separate allowances but I...

Re: Planning retirement in the UK

Yes, the difference between 0.13% and 0.10% expense ratio is not 'much' but VTI is 0.03% and total bonds is 0.05% so as a percentage doesn't look like a lot but it adds up. I could go all in on...

Re: Planning retirement in the UK

Agreed, still it pains me to pay a premium for someone else to balance my portfolio when it takes me about 10 minutes a year and will cost me over $1,000 a year in additional fees to do so (though...

Re: Planning retirement in the UK

Interesting, when I spoke to Schwab (it was an IM exchange not a 'proper' call) they said that I'd open a US Schwab account and then when I planned on moving they'd transfer that account into an...

Re: Planning retirement in the UK

I have Vanguard but will move from them before moving to the UK. When I called them to see if they would have any issue with me moving they said they don't support overseas clients and I could only...

Re: Planning retirement in the UK

I was unaware of that rule with respect to using equity from a home sale, thanks for sharing that. Does a similar rule apply to investments by chance? We have investments we've held for years that...

Re: UK tax questions - what can I fill personal exemption with?

Yes, aside from a checking account and a standard savings account I don't plan on any other form of UK investments. All my money will be US based (still researching if I will change brokerage) and...

Re: 13 months in - struggling

Funnily enough I grew up in North Wales and one of my top destinations being considered for when we return is South Wales but I'm not all that familiar with the area (we'll rent if we do move there)....

UK tax questions - what can I fill personal exemption with?

Hi - as part of my planning for possible return to the UK I'm running a couple tax simulation models to see how much I'll owe (UK and US) based on our situation (or expected situation in the future)....

Proof of cohabitation - living with a relative

Hi - a relative has kindly offered up part of their house (semi-self contained lower level) for the wife and I to live in if we return to the UK. It is not a separate dwelling so the address will be...

Re: USA to UK transfer Social Security to NI contributions

Excellent, thank you.

Does anyone know how (or if) WEP works if you take SS before your OAP, say one would start SS at 65 before OAP starts at 67. Do you get a couple years of SS at full rate then...

Re: USA to UK transfer Social Security to NI contributions

I'd be very grateful if you'd share how this works out for your wife once you find out? I think I'll wait until then before I commit to paying any back years (or future years) voluntarily just in...

Re: USA to UK transfer Social Security to NI contributions

Good to know that I can set up a monthly DD for future contributions, can I set that up prior to moving back do you know? Now that I think about it the pension I have is a company pension not a SIPP....

Re: USA to UK transfer Social Security to NI contributions

I am I safe to assume if one had a small SIPP and it was all depleted before one applies for US SS that it would not be counted (as it's gone, spent) in the WEP calculation?

I've decided to make...
