Re: new car suggestions for first time in the US

Our first US car was a Ford Escort automatic - crap. Our second car (alongside the Escort) was a Chevy Cavalier manual coupe - better, but poor build quality. Twenty years latter, and our 2nd forage...

Re: Teen going back to UK University - Home or International student?

Somewhat complicated: our two daughters got through as UK students - they did have GC's, although we still had a UK home and as such they hadn't really started 'life' in the US. (They since have...

Re: Drug Screen and Background Check - L1 visa

Personally, I'm thankful that I work for a more enlightened (US) employer where such a test might be seen as an infringement of civil liberties.

Clearly using illegal drugs is, well, illegal,...

Re: FBAR Reportable Or Not?

Oh, and while some of you are sorting out their 2017 year end FBAR, note that despite the form being the same 'version' with the same 'effective from' date, the form is different to previous years -...

Re: FBAR Reportable Or Not?

Unfortunately this is one of the vagaries of the reporting system. I declined to have anything to do with my mother's accounts since I might have to report them one way or another.

I'm no tax...

Re: UK Passport Renewal

The online system is extremely efficient. I was going to be back in the UK anyway, so did all the online application, booked an appointment ahead of time, and took 5 minutes to collect it in person.

Re: Buying property in UK - stamp duty

We're currently trying to move house in the UK: we have a US house (wife and me) and UK house (for when we're in the UK and our daughters). Our solicitors have enquired with HMRC as to our position,...

Re: Half or Shared container advice Florida to UK

Years ago (at the dawn of widespread internet/web information) I phoned a shipping company (I believe it was Mason's) in Seattle for shipping household goods from Baltimore back to the UK. We got a...

Re: UK passport renewal from the US

Since I was back in the UK this week, I renewed my UK passport on Monday - I did an online application for a renewal and booked an appointment. The passport was ready and waiting for me, took all of...

Re: Excellent credit rating, what will happen to it in the states?

Credit scores in the US are a scam - in the UK they essentially reflect how god you are at paying your bills/loans on time - in the US they are set to see how much more money the banks can squeeze...

Re: Dual Taxation

We're in a similar position... .

Rightly or wrongly we've paid UK tax on the interest and dividends, paid US tax on these as 'income', but then got a (US) tax credit for the UK tax paid....

Re: Electric appliances help

Indeed - (and I don't have extension cords running around the house and never said I did...!). It is purely to save having multiple UK-US converters hanging off the wall (which in itself is not...

Re: Electric appliances help

We bought a couple of large transformers from amazon for 110V-240V conversion (but they will also do the reverse).

However, we also got a US extension lead and 'added' a UK 4-way 13amp block so...

Re: What are the BBC up to?

One thing I've found that despite using SmartDNS servers supposedly in the UK - that's not where the IP addresses were. Today 'London' was actually in Brazil, 'Glasgow' was in Switzerland, and...

Re: What are the BBC up to?

...very variable accessing the BBC through smartDNS; sometimes it works just fine, others just refreshing the webpage will do, then other times when no matter which UK server is used it says it's...

Re: Mortgage For Brand New Immigrant?

We got our first US mortgage with Wells Fargo - at the time they seemed to be the only ones willing to provide mortgages to newbies. However, this first mortgage took over 13 months to sort out (!) -...

Re: UK Foods in the US Share your finds!

For those dying for Thorntons chocolates - saw large boxes of their continental selection in Bed Bath and Beyond today in Annapolis - reasonably priced too. :)
