If it came up in future interviews, it's impossible for them to know that my intention was to look for a job (unless I'm mistaken, mind-reading technology has not been invented yet).

Why not? Using a tourist VWP to look for a job.... I would consider this to belong purely within the "white lie" territory. It's not like I'm trying to blow up the WTC here.

OK I've done some further reading. From what I understand, I can apply for a COS, and can remain in the US until it's been processed, but in the event that it gets denied, I would have those days...

Ok but is it really that easy to do a COS after being fired? A B1/B2 visa is not supposed to be issued to someone who is looking for work in the US, it's more targeted towards temporary...
