Just want to be sure of something; if I enter the USA to join my wife with the intent of immigration, that would be in breach of the VWP. Right? And the outcome would be bad, right?

Having had both hard and soft cases of the Samsonite brand, I would go for the soft sided in future. The hard case took a lot more abuse and the catches are vulnerable to damage where zips less so....
