sorry should have made it clearer, if the Spanish tax rules do not change in Murcia we will not be spending more than 6 months in Spain and therefore will not be tax resident.

We plan to retire to Murcia in around 2 years time at which time we will become resident and maybe tax resident depending on whether the Spanish tax rates change in the mean time in particular IHT...

I have no issue with paying UK taxes or Spanish income / CGT taxes it is the IHT tax that seems particularly harsh in Spain and even more so in Murcia!

but the IHT would only be payable on our Spanish property which is a lot less than the value of our UK property

I am aware of the non resident property taxes but they do not concern me as much as...

so.....

If we spend only 182 days in Spain and
say 60/90 days anywhere else such as florida, Portugal etc and
spend the balance of the year back in UK each year,

we should remain...

if you rent though tebo53 and spend more than 6 months in Spain aren't you considered to be tax resident and therefore Spanish IHT rates would then apply?

The other option is only spend slightly...

We have purchased a small townhouse in Murcia and were planning to retire there shortly for all least 10 years before probably returning to UK Grandkids by then hopefully! We were planning to sell UK...

many thanks for your comprehensive response

Another option would be 3 months spain then leave for 6 and then return to Spain for another 3 months

We were planning a longer term 3- 6 month...

We have worked for the last 35 years in the UK and born here.

With regard to UK residency would we be allowed to travel for a few years without losing UK tax residency providing we did not meet...

We have the option of staying with son in the UK when back home.

We were planning to spend 183 days in Spain and then 183 somewhere else other than the UK. Therefore not qualifying for tax...
