Why does the length of time for people getting their GC's after H-1B differ so much?

I've been reading threads in this forum for quite a while now.

It seems to take people on H-1B visas ages to get the GC! I never thought that to be the case from the people I know who have gotten...

That's true. Another uni mate now lives in Upstate NY, after receiving a scholarship at an ivy league uni to do a 2-year MSc there, then got her PhD funded, too. Her sister did the exact same thing...
