USCs are not exempt from being questioned. In the end, however, they have the right of entry to the US regardless of what is asked or how long it takes.

When USCs (and probably the same for some aliens) get the twenty questions, it's most likely the CBP officer has his customs officer hat on, and is assessing whether or not to send the traveller to secondary customs screening. (I got sent to secondary customs once because I'd ticked the "food" box on my customs form. The secondary officer had a quick glance in the heavy-duty carrier bag I had my biscuits and sweets in and sent me on my way.)

Really? Never had this experience at SFO. Got through automatically at JFK, i.e. no human contact. Had a few questions in ATL, but nothing weird. I have a European passport. However, most immigration officers never smile, so I just don't expect a huge smile and a welcome sign.

Weirdly enough... as a teen travelling days after 9/11, they didn't even check my passport. Just waived me through to board my plane to Europe.
