If you don't earn over a certain amount you don't start paying it back do you ?
Think this is the same for both the UK Uni finance AND the Aus Uni finance systems.

And maybe this bit only applies...

How about paying a lot less rent by getting a house / flat only twice the size of your current place ? Might not be the dream but as renting you can upsize pretty easily if things are working out...

Just joined the forum but have been wanting to live somewhere warm an by the sea for a long time.
Sadly would need a job too !!
