Might not help much as your with Barclays but my wife and I have Citibank accounts both in the UK and US. Its simple to transfer money between accounts - the exchange rate is pretty impressive...

It could be different as you don't need a Visa, but when I opted to have my SS number taken care of while in the UK, it was a right pain! The process actually didn't happen so on arrival...

Well, if that's the case then they should offer scams like that more often. I was looking at having no insurance until I got my US license and Mercury wouldn't insure me either but Geico said yeah no...

We just went through the same thing. You can get insured no problem with your UK license (we used Geico) however you may not get the discounts as you need a state license for that. There is some form...
