Re: Olympic Games 2012

I thought the whole thing was so brilliant. I particularly liked the James Bond/Liz thing. And Mr Bean. And the Sex Pistols.
I can't think of any other country that would have such a vast wealth of...

Re: Whatya Reading??

Kindle/iPad owners - I just bought the entire works of F Scott Fitzgerald (one of my favourite writers) from amazon.it for just €1.64. Bargain!

Re: meeting expats

Talking of respect for women, another thing that wouldn't be accepted in UK anymore (and quite rightly, I think) is the constant presence of bikini-clad 'dolly birds' (not a term I would normally...

Re: meeting expats

Me too. Discussing different points of view with polite, mature people this way is why I come to forums.

Re: meeting expats

Not with you, I'm afraid. That phrase from the article ("quando si parla di "extracomunitari" si allude quasi esclusivamente agli immigrati che vengono dall’Africa o dall’Albania o dai territori...

Re: meeting expats

I thought the discussion was about the use of the Italian term "extracomuntari". Frankly, I couldn't care less about 'black' or 'coloured' - whatever people prefer is fine by me. I would hate to...

Re: meeting expats

What's the difference?
I would've thought that the article totally contradicts your point of view ("I have no problem with it").
(I'm not trying to be picky, I'm just interested in understanding...

That's an excellent article, 37100. Thanks for posting it.

Re: meeting expats

I agree. I don't think it's a race issue though. If the UK offers state benefits to foreigners then the same benefits should be available to UK citizens in the respective foreigners' country....

Re: meeting expats

"have you ever wondered why there "seems" to be less foreigners in Italy then the UK.
Could it be that they do not cave in to every whim, or are not politically correct"

I can't really comment on...

Re: meeting expats

I was (I thought, very clearly) talking about how the term is used, not any dictionary definition. In theory it simply means "from outside the EU" as we both know. In practise I find it is applied to...

Re: meeting expats

Sorry, Posh, but you're wrong. The term "extra communitario" is both rude and racist. It is used to mean "black" and/or from a poor country. I've heard it applied to a friend of mine who is British,...

Re: Italian TV shows worth watching

It never ceases to amaze me how the media here is obsessed with England. Tv, radio and newspapers are all reporting the arrest of Rebekah Brooks! Why would any Italian be interested??? Her equivalent...

Re: Whatya Reading??

Am reading 'I, Partridge' at the mo. Alan Partridge's "autobiography". Very funny indeed. Thoroughly recommended. I can't help reading it in his voice though!

Re: Italian TV shows worth watching

The only programme I used to watch before getting Sky was Le Iene. I haven't seen it for years though and have no idea if it's still marginally more watchable than the rest of the crap that's on!

Ship sinking joke

A ship carrying three American ex-presidents was sinking. "Women and children first" cried Jimmy Carter. "***** the women" snarled Nixon, barging for the lifeboats. "Have we got time?" said Bill...

Hi Adele,
I think you're a bit wrong about there being no English people in Bari. There are loads! Most commonly they are English teachers like yourself. There are several English language schools...

Thumbs up Re: 10 months here and depression is setting in

Three things to think about, Sunny:
1. I agree, most Italians are boring at best. Family, family, food and family is the extent of their interests. I'm a total misanthropic grumpy middle aged man...

Re: TALK THE TALK. ITALIAN LANGUAGE QUESTIONS.

Hi Lorna. I can't think of a totally satisfying translation offhand. (I usually try to avoid translation work, cos I always find myself overthinking things and getting stuck for ages on a single...

Re: Don't want any British Around Here?

Interesting question. In theory I like to think I'm not bothered about nationality ("citizen of the world" and all that). However, in reality a big problem here is that locals don.'t tend to travel...

I'm reading Saviano's book about them at the mo. Have you read it? If so, does the documentary touch similar ground?

Re: Polish people in Como?

Sorry 37100, but I can't agree that ignoring discriminatory remarks is the best policy. It implies consent.

Re: Polish people in Como?

Rather boring, I'm afraid. I'm a total Pink Floyd fan. Pink Anderson and Floyd Council were blues musicians who inspired Roger Waters' choice of band name. My real name is Lady Gaga.
