But surely If the house is still being paid for, bank account still open and my wife is coming back after a few weeks to take care until it is sold she would still be classed as a resident ?

That sounds crazy to me , there must be so many people who have to start work in the US or Europe with a new employer before they close on their house in Canada. Companies often relocate employees...
