Re: E-3 Visa for Australians Thread- It's all in here

Hi Ian,

No, it's not fraud at all - at least not in Australia. It's done a lot in Australia by foreign contractors. I would be working full-time for the Umbrella company and being sent to third...

Hello everyone, thanks for this great thread.

My situation: Aussie who wants to work in the US for a year.

Re: Withholding tax = $0, how much should I pay?

Yes, TN status. The company has lots of Canadian contractors so I assume/hope they've sorted out that out.

Thanks so much for all the info, we shall investigate.

I'm like Dr Who, I constantly regenerate!

No, actually I am indeed visiting my Canadian girlfriend in the US and I posed the question on her behalf. She is a UK resident...

Re: Withholding tax = $0, how much should I pay?

Thanks, but the employer doesn't want to handle the tax, says it's up to the contractors. Calculating the amount isn't the problem, it's more about whether the IRS gets shirty if you wait too long....

Withholding tax = $0, how much should I pay?

I'm a UK resident and passport holder, first job in the USA, working as an engineering contractor, earning good money. BUT... my employer is not withholding any tax. Stories go around the office...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

Not at all, not at all. The USA wants, likes and actively encourages tourists. And why not, I'm only adding to the economy and taking nothing away from it. They allow stays of up to 90 days, so...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

I'm not going to say 90 days, usually I just say a few weeks if asked. And who's to say, maybe I will only stay a few weeks. That's a good thing about travelling with a flexible one-way, you can set...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

Thanks Duncan. I still don't believe they apply that in practice but the point is that they can so I had better get a return ticket.

I just went to the Virgin website and tried to book a one-way...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

"Plus, isn't it cheaper to get a non-restricted return ticket that you can change the end date on if needed?"

I wouldn't think so. I usually get the cheapest available one-ways.
If either side of...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

Hmm, not sure if Virgin would ask to see a return ticket if you were flying with them, surely if you had one they'd know about it?

It happened to me recently in Canada, I came in on a one-way, the...

Re: Girlfriend in the USA

Hi Duncan,
I've visited the USA nearly every year for the last 10 years on visa waiver and they have never asked for return tickets - until last year. Then I had two one-way tickets, one in and one...

Girlfriend in the USA

Howdy,

I want to go visit my long-term girlfriend in the US. She is a Canadian on TN status and I have an EU passport (if that's important). I read this forum a lot about a year ago and I got the...

Re: Golf trip advice

Thanks for the tips!

I met someone today who's been, he told me to get away from Faro as it's expensive near there, and to go to the Western Algarve. He figures a round will be about 70 euros,...

Golf trip advice

Hi there,

We (51 & 45) are planning on hopping on Easyjet and heading to the Algarve for a week of two or golf and escape from this dire British summer. Last time I was in Portugal was 1978 so I...

Re: Luxembourg - where to live?

No, I already have a European passport.

I was thinking Belgium would be popular - smaller country, less bureaucracy, people more likely to speak English.

Re: Luxembourg - where to live?

My preferences are lower taxes and less hassles! Do you know which one most ex-pats (esp Brits) gravitate towards?

Hello, I'm in the running for a job in Luxembourg.

Is this true? Is there a particular reason for this? Which is the best...

Re: Port Gentil/ Gabon

Whether you'd consider Port Gentil expensive depends on what you're comparing it to. I haven't been there for a while but it's a large town and so I always reason if others on much lower pay can live...
