...is a a piece of piss, in case anybody's worried! :) We just drove round the block, and that was it! It took 15 minutes, if that.

You should be ok bringing in a HDD. I had 5 of 'em in my luggage when I came in, and had no problems at all. I encrpyted most of them, just because I'm a paranoid bugger, but they didn't cause me any...

I'm afraid I know very little about the legal side of things, but you could put it all on an encrpyted external harddrive. Unlike in the UK, US law does NOT require you to hand over encryption keys.
