Re: What kind of visa for my wife

It's possible you are right. The change in status from limited leave as a visitor, to limited leave as a spouse is not specifically prohibited, but the original leave to enter seems to have to be for...

Re: What kind of visa for my wife

It seems very likely that your wife will have to apply for entry clearance in Iran as your spouse. As this is a settlement visa, it will be expensive and take a long time. I don't know of any way to...

Re: Need to get back to Oz

Sorry for your troubles.

Just went to http://www.seatcounter.com where I normally check availabilty and all economy fares are sold on CX from HKG to MEL, with the exception of the flight below...

Re: P.R.China, any advise?

(A) Does anyone have any experience with transferring a work and residents visa from one employer to an other while in China? I've been searching the internet but can hardly find anything on the...

Re: Shanghai on 10000 RMB?

Obviously my reply is massively out of date now, but RMB10k in Shanghai is not a living wage. For anyone coming across this thread in future, health insurance is very important. Health care in...

Re: Do you speak the lingo?

I don't think it's going to make much difference. Many speakers of either Cantonese or Mandarin will have had some exposure to English already, but I don't see that helping much to be honest. What I...

Re: Do you speak the lingo?

I can understand that, but for most speakers of Mandarin, no matter where they are, it's a second language for them, and has been for generations. There are of course people in Beijing and Taipei who...

Re: Do you speak the lingo?

Same in Taiwan.... ;) Funny enough, an Aussie mate of mine who grew up in Malaysia (father in the RAAF) swears his first language was Hokkien 'cause his Amah used to speak to him in it.

Talking Re: Do you speak the lingo?

IMHO Mandarin is the spoken version of Chinese to learn - became very popular in Hong Kong too in the run-up to 1997. Other than gweilo Hong Kong police, I have never met anyone who learnt Cantonese...

Re: How much money did you move with (or plan to move with if you haven't already)

I am still making my mind up, and I could well be going over with very little money indeed.

Re: Aus citizen returning after 30+ years - issues?

Ah yes, I missed the "or". Doh! Thanks for your response.

I was worried that it was like the UK "habitual residence" test for the NHS and other benefits.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Question Aus citizen returning after 30+ years - issues?

Been lurking for a while now and finding the website very informative. I hope to post briefly elsewhere and introduce myself, but in the meantime I have a (perhaps) unusual question. I am considering...

Re: Hong Kong airport?

There are two lounges in HK airport, IIRC they are both called the Plaza Lounge, and you can pay a small fee and sit in there. They have tins of beer, soft drinks, sandwiches, snacks, papers, and the...

Re: How much money did you move with (or plan to move with if you haven't already)

Yes good points. I did wonder why the breakdown was so detailed. Also, a single person could do it on very little of course. I moved to Asia once from the UK with £500 in cash, albeit I had a job...
