My children have dual nationality . They can make there own decisions when they are older . They will be visiting the UK for the 1st time in the summer .

Bluff. The English (or British), love a bit of all out pageantry, Diamond Jubilee, Royal Wedding, Olympic opening ceremony, The Proms…..however these are British rather than English


I made no suggestion that the UK doesn't have an interesting and colourful history, so not really sure why you're bringing that up. If you're suggesting that having 'history' means you also have 'culture', then I have to disagree. Culture of course includes a shared history, but also language, habits, arts, music, food, behaviours, values, beliefs, attitudes and so on. My agreement really is that the within the regions of England there are many different cultures, and ultimately hanging these together to give an identifiable ‘English culture’ is very difficult, if not presently impossible.

There are many things to be thankful for being born in the UK , however , that does not mean that you have to blindly say that all in the UK is great.

I have better things to do that trying to educate you, a task for which I suspect there are not enough hours in the day. I have been referring to British/UK as I believe we do have an overriding National identity and if you really don't know about Britsh culture(s) and history and indeed appear to dislike them, I do have to wonder why you keep returning to this board.

There is plenty of culture - in every sense in England, as well as the UK as a whole, but it is quite clear that you have taken a stance and no matter how wrong, you're going to hang on to that.

So true. Marvellously ironic that the inhabitants of East Anglia (specifically Ipswich) keep banging on about immigrants. Their tiny minds would be blown if they followed us out here! Thankfully their webbed feet keep them in the marshes.

Nobody has said that everything in the UK is great and twisting other poster's comments to try and suit your own warped point of view is shabby.

You have the title 'concierge' on a British expat forum, but I am surely not the only one who really doesn't think you are the right person to represent anything even vaguely British in any way.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been stirring the pot in this thread a bit (all in good fun of course), but I’m pretty sure no one even suggested that ‘all in the UK is great’. The view has been balanced, leaning toward a thumbs up for all the good stuff whilst acknowledging there’s been some things, which by todays moral standards, are reprehensible, but were largely put right.

Chaps, while I acknowledge the questionable attitudes of the past we of all Brits should recognise that the UK has for a very, very long time been a veritable paradise in comparison with other parts of the world TODAY, both developed and developing. I'll take a bit of Daily Mail xenophobia and even EDL protest because thank God we have the right to protest in England - contrast with Bahrain only this weekend.

If another uni-educated lawyer with both parents alive and owning their own house bangs on about how working class they are, I will drag them by the scruff of their neck down to the Industrial Area of Doha and show them the thousands upon thousands of labourers living in camps beside cement factories and explain their terms of employment in the "richest country in the world (TM)."

Technically speaking everyone's an immigrant if you go back far enough, except perhaps for certain regions of Africa where the first humans originated.

Well......not exactly. I agree the 'British' have done a lot of positive things in the last few hundred years. However, I don't believe that translates into an 'English' culture. For me this is where the line between what is 'British' and what is 'English' seem to be blurred for many people. Where as the blurring of what is 'British' versus what it 'Scottish' or 'Welsh' is far less.

Based in KSA but not a concierge for the Middle East forum? That seems a bit silly, were you based somewhere else before and moved to Saudi and still join in the old forum bit?

Anyway, that's irrelevant, just me being nosey.
