Re: Rolling Stone magazine's Ten Best Singers Of All Time
My best singers? A higher proportion of jazz/soul/blues singers than most people would include I suspect, some of them having already been mentioned (Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick and the ludicrously underrated Roberta Flack would be up there). Billie Holiday was special but her reputation was tarnished by Diana Ross's portrayal of her in 'Lady Sings The Blues'........ not good.
White singers? Very few (I'm still trying to avoid falling into the 'personal favourites' trap I accused others of, but 90 pct of my record collection is black, so I suppose I'm biased). Eva Cassidy had a pure and lovely voice.
And don't laugh - Tom Jones is a great singer.

Ah I see.......... blame Rolling Stone - according to them 1952 was the beginning of time.
