I have 4 emails in my in-box which I use as a "to do" list that is too long to put into the Tasks section of Outlook.

I see, I read, I action, file, or delete.

b) interesting strategy, but sadly not one I've employed yet. thanks for the idea though!
c) working mum with high-level career and two school aged kids - I am ninja in efficiency and timing/planning. I don't get as much down time though as I would like.

Thank god I'm not alone I got to 11,000 and decided to start deleting and despite deleting a week or so ago what seems like hundreds today I've got almost 11,500

Typically zero in my personal email by the end of every day. Usually I read and then either delete, reply or file it. I get about 20 or 30 personal emails per day, but I find it's reducing as I am more likely to use whatsapp for quick messages or a general catch up.
But generally speaking I am not a hoarder, more of an extreme email feng shui practitioner.

There's some online service, which is free for the first 10-15 which auto-unsubscribes you from loads of sites. It was magical and utterly wonderful when I launched it.

If I remember the name I'll tell you.
