Some other base means some other grouping. The impolite and impatient behaviour you refer to is a result of social conventions within a group, not the religion of that group. If this were not the case, muslims in Indonesia would display exactly the same characteristics of muslims in Qatar. However, if it would cheer you up I would concede that there is often an overlap cultural norms and religious norms, and that you may have simply been using a shorthand in your comment.

Boomhauer's post was incorrect, hence the need to respond.

What was incorrect about the comment that religion is culture? By that I meant that religion is an aspect of culture, a big or crucial aspect of culture to many.
What is wrong in stating that religion is a cultural construct? Just like dress, cuisine, language ; all cultural entities.

The enhanced definition (above) is correct. :)

I know it for a fact that it is beyond you to understand what tranquillity that scholar was referring to, hence your confusion. But you know what, I got some interesting news for you. Atheism is actually the first step towards Islam!!! Because to be a Muslim you have to utter a statement called Shahada which begins with this clause “I bear witness that there is no God, but one God”. So for an atheist he has already declared the part before the ‘but’. All that is left is to say is the second part:lol:

And what about you!! You didn’t specify what job you had had in the air force, I would imagine anything but in no way they would let you anywhere near an aircraft:rofl:

Explain please why you consider Boomhauer's post yet you ignore me?

Tricky one I know.

I actually didn’t know that you are a female, all along I’ve thought that you were a bloke (though you did come across as softy)!! Is this your picture then? If so I must say you are a number! And how many decades ago was this picture taken? ;)

simple answer is, they don’t. They just pick and chose

LOL! You are funny. You seem to forget that we are all born aethists, you have to learn religion which is why most people are the same religion as their parents. Funny that isn't it? It's highly unusual to be able to choose your own religion based on who has the nicest churches, the best sermons, the most rocking hymns etc. You don't have a choice normally, it's thrust upon you by your parents who brainwash you.
Also you're actually an aetheist as I'm sure you don't believe in Zeus, Apollo, Bacchus, Brahma, Cernunnos, Freya, Horus, Krishna, Loki and the list goes on & on. If you understand why you don't believe in all of those gods then you'll understand why I don't believe in one more god than you.

I was an Air Traffic Controller and I'm still in this industry, 39 years in January. They do say that an ATCO is responsible for more lives on one shift than a surgeon is during their entire career ;)

C'mere, there's more :D
What's the similarity between an ATCO and a pilot?

If the pilot makes a mistake the pilot dies. If an ATCO makes a mistake the pilot dies ;)

I think the differences are more interesting. The pilot can get laid within an hour of his shift ending if he keeps his suit on - the ATCO will be driving home in his Prius while eating his sandwiches that he didn't get to have at lunchtime. :)

I must have made it, I refuse to accept anything less than ham, cheese, pickle, salad cream / mayo, rocket and pepper.

If it isn't packed full, it's not getting eaten.

Lasagna today, tupperware tub weighs about 500g. Can't wait for the battle with a nap that will bug me for the entire afternoon.

I don't know many English people would say one has to be a Christian to be English. Christianity simply doesn't teach such things, yet I don't think there would be one Saudi who would say one doesn't have to be Muslim to be Saudi...indeed the main requirement for citizenship in many Muslim states (most not all) would be being a Muslim, especially in the GCC. And in places where people are not Muslims they usually have to be registered and often take second place to the majority (like the Copts in Egypt).

To repeat myself, some religions in their very scriptures condone political and cultural dimensions - others are far more open and flexible, focusing not on the flesh but the mind and/or spirit.

Very good points.

The 'not all religions are created equal' is an important theme for Westerners to understand.
