If so, they must have put him on a "long charge" the night before that program, because he was a ball of energy. I hope I have as much energy at his age.
He really is a national treasure, I don't care what all the whingers say about him. ;) |

Re: What makes Britain Great?
The actual answer to what makes "Great Britain" great is that it is the largest island in the British Isles. Great Britain is the name of the island that comprises England, Scotland and Wales. It's interesting that everyone assumes that "Great" refers to prowess, success or some aspect of national identity rather than just an adjective to describe the island relative to the other islands in the British isles.

See Sally's answer in the second post in this thread
The name Britain descends from the Latin name for Britain, Brittania or Britt?nia, the land of the Britons. Great Britain came into use when Geoffrey of Monmouth in c. 1136 referred to the island of Great Britain as Britannia major Greater Britain, to distinguish it from Britannia minor Lesser Britainâ€. ......... or where Lesser Britain is or was. |
Re: What makes Britain Great?
I have no interest in a history lesson, can we restrict conversation to what you find Great about Britain please :)
Having just returned from a wonderful meal at one of the village pubs I must reiterate food AND pubs :D |

Plus, history lessons are not off topic, since pedantry and obscurantism are one of the things that makes Britain great.;) |

Speaking of pedantry - this thread should be 'What makes the United Kingdom great'. I know it takes away the clever play on words but by saying Great Britain, you're only talking about 75% of the greatness*
based on number of member countries, not actual size before someone attempts to out-pedant me ... I trump on your pedantry. Oh yeah, a weird and whacky idea of what constitutes humour is also what makes Britain Great (and makes the United Kingdom United). |
