This is a pretty good indicator of how ridiculous that statement is, the Uk's murder rate is Tiny, even lower than Canada and Australia

An ex. professional heavyweight boxer friend of mine told me: he does not walk down town at night without a buddy. When we lived there that was not a problem..

Germany's homicide rate according to the BKA (German FBI) was 3.0 per 100k persons, not 1.16. The former includes all homicides (Mord & Totschlag), while the latter only seems to count murder.
Nation Master needs to update the stats.
In 2005, Trinidad and Tobago, with a population of a little over 1m (1,070,000 according to the CIA Factbook) had 387 murders or 0.362 per 1,000.
Up to March 2006, there have already been 110 murders in T&T, a trend that will eclipse the record 387 set last year.
In this 99/2000! survey, The UK is really low on the list but if you split it into the home nations, England and Wales have like 0.7 per 100,000 whereas Scotland has 2.5 or something its the second highest in western Europe.
The UK seems to be on a slippery slope as far as crime is concerned , this will probably stay that way until you control the 1000's of fundamentalists & eastern European/African/Asian, etc. criminals that your government has allowed in, lowering your standard of living in most areas.

One of my biggest reasons for being unsure about returning to England is personal safety for myself and my family.
We are so up and down, we just can't decide what we want.
One day we are going to try and settle and stay then the next day we are desperate to go back to the UK.
Aug 2005 we arrived in France so excited about our new adventure, hating England and believing everything in the papers, yes we got caught up in all the negative stuff.
Feb/Mar 07 we had our first spell of homesickness and admitted to ourselves and to each other that this didn't have to be forever and that it would be ok to return.
April/May 07 the weather was spring like and we decided that we would be mad to give it all up.
Nov/Dec 07 Christmas is looming, we miss family and want to go home.
Christmas came and went we made the most of it and did have a lovely time, decided again that we should stick it out.
Early January we decide we can't stick it out and want to go home.
Then it all gets too complicated to explain, we change from one day to the next.
My main concern is personal safety for all of us, I feel safe here in deepest rural France and to be honest I am scared to live in England.
Can anyone relate to this feeling, I tell myself that it is irrational fear but it still stands in my way.

I spent my early years in
a council flat in Bermondsey,
I wouldn't go there on a bet, but you will generally find most Government housing Projects as something you want to avoid.
The UK has seriously deteriorated in some areas, it has probably some of the dirtiest parts of Europe, take a Barging Holiday on the Continent, then do the same in the U.K, the difference in cleanliness is hugely noticeable.
I visit the UK routinely, but have the means to stay in the nicer areas and to enjoy those parts that are yet unspoiled.
In Canada, we drink to socialise, in the UK far too many drink to get drunk.
Oh yes, I did attend several U.S Universities, post Grad, also attended 3 Canadian Universities.
