The Cotswolds are the limestone hills known for the beautiful golden stone used in the cottages. Calne is in the Northern part of the North Wessex Downs.

I went back to the property listing and all I could see in reference to the Cotswolds was "Surrounding areas: Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, South West" but it's quite close .

The first one is a semi (only half of that cottage). The second one is a terrace. Would your DW be happy with that scenario?

Yes, I'm still thinking that Herefordshire and Shropshire offer good value for money as well as being interesting counties.

As they say 'we are on the same page'

I also plug in to see how long it takes to get to London by train from the different towns and then I wonder if I will ever need to go to London. Kind of like wanting to go to NYC with all the mobs of people and such.

As has been mentioned that there are a lot of vacant shops on Main Streets in the UK and I think a lot of the shops started out as homes so i think this could be reversed and they could be made back into homes. Here is one shop that was made into a home again.

There's a pub near where I used to live that closed down. It was on a corner, and quite a big building. It has now been turned into flats. Looks very nice, but looked better as a pub!

I came to the same conclusion. I would like to go to London occasionally but how hard can that be from anywhere in the UK if I only go once or twice a year which is what it will be realistically, so I am removing proximity to London as one of my criteria.

The rest of my criteria are much harder to satisfy: how can I have space and land and be close to the sea? Difficult on my budget unless I consider Northern Somerset (Hinckley Point ), Severn estuary (Oldbury), North and West Wales or other areas inaccessible to my key points. I may have to give up the idea of being by the sea.

Will do. Can you expound on that? Suggest any places or give me detail about the area?

This is location with a plus. The house is right next to a industrial area. It could be close to work for someone.
A large house for the money.
