However, you could always ask Howard if he has any urges to do so?

Just a basic shop of yogurts, bread, meat, cereals nothing flashy, I certainly didn't pay £8.99 for 12 yogurts in England like I just had to pay $8.99 for 12 in Canada. I just paid $5.99 for a small block of cheese too and I wouldn't pay that in the UK. There is no doubt that where I live in BC the majority of food is more expensive. As a percentage of our income, the food that we buy in Canada is a larger figure.
Not sure why you are so interested in knowing my shopping bill?! The original poster was asking for reasons why I was returning to the UK and I listed cost of living as one of my reasons and I stand by that 100%. Quality sucks too, have you tasted the rubber ham they serve here - yuk!
In England I never had to worry about the cost of a food bill but here I have to keep it under $400 otherwise DH goes nuts.
Enjoy your lunch!

I'm not sure how long it is since you shopped in the UK but I think you'll be surprised at how much food costs are rising in the UK now. They are rocketing. Your cheese costs look pretty much the same as here. You won't get a small block for much less than 3 quid. It's not just food thats going up in price. Everything is! Middle Englanders are really suffering at the moment and it's going to get much worse before it gets better.

We been back 2 years in the UK and noticed food gone up. My wife tried the advice from TV to cut costs and dropping the premium brands and found its helped. Also having supestores a few miles from our village helps with the budget.
We lived rural Alberta and Ontario and found food so expenive compared to my income. In Alberta our food bill was 40% of my take home pay and Ontario 28%. Supermarkets where we lived we owned by one family
No TESCO or Sainsbury type of superstores in rural Canada. Supermarkets where we lived we owned by one family, so no discount food or 2 for one deals. I can remember 10 years ago we paid $1.20 (60p) for a simple can of beans.
Some things were cheaper, PEPSI colca, Chips(crisps), Steak and Kraft dinners, but these were not part of our diet..
Currently in the UK our family food bill is 15% of my net income. In the UK we are custom to cheap food(read this in a Canadian book about life in the UK).
It was not the main factor for us to return to the UK. But having good foodstores at reasonable prices was definitely an attraction for us to return.

Meat is much much much cheaper here in BC than where I came from in the UK. I don't know if this link will work or not but this is a typical flyer of prices here in Kamloops.

Baby stuff is another nasty one, nappy's wipes etc, which ties in conveniently with the milk. In quebec your prescription costs are subsidised by 70% which hurts when some medication costs 300$, you still have to pay 90$ for something which would be around 7 quid in the UK. Every time my kid needs antibiotics (sometimes 60$) I have to fork out, in the UK it would be free as my kids are under 16.
Petrol on the face of it seems cheaper in Canada but you really need to spend out a lot of money for a decent economical vehicle. In fact second hand cars are way way more expensive in Canada, most vehicles are gas guzzlers so fuel costs end up being the same as the UK.
In most of Canada heating costs are massive, my heating is running often contiously from the end of October until the middle of April, it's minus 23 outside as I write, my heating is working overtime. That's big money!!
