Actually I have never, ever been asked to show ID anywhere except for
purposes like changing money, and being stopped by cops for traffic
offenses.

I almost never carry my passport around in continental Europe (assuming
I've checked into a hotel etc., as I prefer to leave it there), even in
countries where it's required to have some form of ID.

No need to throw your teddy out of the pram. The point is simply that
some people on this ng who spend their life travelling around Europe
generally don't feel the need to adopt extreme measures to protect
their wallets, and wish to dispel the notion that there is a jungle
waiting to snare the unsuspecting. If you want to do so, that's up to
you, but I suspect you'd be better advised to devote that mental energy
to avoiding being run over by a car.

    > But whatever, I'm finished here.

Your choice.

Thanks for the complement :).
But I only meant in the Martin pissing contest.

After almost 10yrs posting here I know that when you hit 'Send' you are
inviting those in who are just waiting around opening every single
Thread and trying to start a pissing contest over anything and
everything:).

I do start Threads over at Fodors usually about Rome (historical finds,
daytrips, museum info, updating old info, etc) but its (I threw that one
in for Magda:) a waste of time to post on-topic info here just to feed
these regular trolls.

So I just respond occasionally to on-topic posts and usually avoid most
of the regulars.
Except this time and I knew it was a waste of time and foolish even
before I sent the 1st post:). Regards, Walter

My partner and I were asked for ID in Rome in 1997. I think they thought
my partner was an illegal immigrant, and I was negotiating to pay for
his services. My partner isn't white, so naturally the only thing the
observant Italian cops could have assumed was that he was an illegal
immigrant. The only thing on me was my Harvard ID, and my partner had an
IATA card. They assumed we were Americans once we flashed them (they
were half right, I suppose) and bid us on our way, warning us to be
careful as it was a dangerous area. It was near Termini, and it wasn't
dangerous- apart from bumping into these muppets with badges and guns.

I doubt the cops were trying to shake down your operator for a guide.
They don't strike me as organised or resourceful enough for that.

Exclamation mark!

I've spent 40 years frequently travelling around Europe without ever
having been the victim of pickpockets. I don't even know anybody who has
been the victim of pick pockets. What am I doing wrong?
My son was mugged in the Hague. If he had had everything in one
wallet/neck pouch that would have just speeded things up. IME there is a
far higher risk of having a car broken into - twice in the Netherlands,
once in Rome and once in Antibes. The total of things stolen so far is
one road map and a very cheap radio belonging to Hertz.
