Another good idea. This all got me thinking though, how many UK people
travel abroad and worry about theft, but don't consider opening a bank
account with Nationwide for foreign withdrawals? :)

One problem with both is Airport Security. Unless you wear a turtle-neck or
a fully buttoned shirt or blouse, the cords from the neck wallet show.
Security wants to see what is hanging from it. It also makes a lump. The
waist wallet makes a lump too, and Security notices and sometimes asks to
see the item. There are bra wallets -- presumably a lump there would not be
bothersome to the wearer -- unless perhaps it was several thousand euro in
small bills.

Why is that a problem? If security wants to see it, why would you
care? It is not illegal. Well, what is in mine is not:)

Your English syntax doesn't sound like it, that's sure.

I always remove it when going through security. The old one had
metal zippers. Even now there is a good chance of having some
metal in it. So it goes through with my coat or something.

I think mine is safer yet. It's a pocket INside my slacks where I carry
large bills, a debit card I use at ATMs that doubles as credit card, my
passport outside airports, and plane ticket if I have a paper one. In
one side outside pocket I carry a coin purse with smaller bills and
coins and in another a small notebook with a credit card carrying my
foto, a bit harder for a thief to make use of. And I never wear a
tucked-in shirt, so I can yet "rape!" at anyone even reaching for the
outside pockets 8-) No one ever has.

If you have some money in a pocket, how is he to know it's there?

I have one of those neck pouch things, but only use it in airports where
I have to keep showing people my passport and boarding pass. The rest of
any trip it's empty and packed in the bottom of my backpack.

Have you thought of opening bank accounts abroad?

Yes, but no. In retrospect, I would have saved money in Barcelona if I'd
done this, but not much, and it would have been a bit of a faff. I only
recently got my NIE from the cops there (which is for 'life' I suppose)-
meanwhile, I'd already received three payments into my UK account from
there!

In the long term, it is worth having accounts in countries you visit
frequently.

I've survived Barcelona and Rome and all the other places which have
pickpocketing problems.

Been carrying a messenger bag (no real valuables in it though, other
than my sunglasses sometimes) and also a fanny pack on the left side of
my waist.

Yes I know, not fashionable. But short of a holster, very convenient
and lets me access my wallet and iPod inside very easily. Oh and a
camera bag on the right side of my waist. I can take it off with one
press of the plastic clasp.

Been in so many standing room only subway trains. Certainly an
opportunity to try to reach in to the fanny pack there but have been
lucky so far.

Often listening to the iPod so I must be an inviting target.

I tried a belt wallet when I visited Australia, but it was unpleasant in the
heat. So I divided up my few dollars into several places (trouser pocket,
jacket pocket, rucksack and deposited the rest in a WestPac savings account.

Before departure I emptied the account and had it cancelled. Moreover,
nobody tried to mug me.

Actually, I suspect you are presenting yourself quite the opposite.
For whatever reason, the fact that your bags don't contain
any "real" valuables, or the manner in which you manage the
contents of the fanny pack probably "mark" you as someone
not to bother with. All in all probably an image to cultivate
regardless of the correlation to reality.
