Where Do Europeans Go for WInter Holidays?
If you live in northern Europe and you decide, along about January, that
you'd really like to get to some warm sun and sand where do you go?
Here in the eastern US, we go to the Caribbean - when we've saved up
enough to be able to afford it. And some go to Disneyland I guess. But
that would not be tropical enough for me - besides the fact that I would
never dream of going to Disneyland (or is it Disney World?) So what are
the tropical destinations for Europeans?

Baleares, Canary Islands, Tunisia, Israel, Egypt, Kenya for example.

Not all those destinations are tropical. The Mediterranean destinations do
have "winter", but a rather mild one.

Last year, I spent New Years Eve in Taormina in Sicily. It is, evidently,
very popular with Italians. It reminded me of somewhat of Miami Beach --

North Africa, the Canaries, and of course the Caribbean.
From the eastern US a weekend trip to the Caribbean only costs about 25-30
hours' work (after taxes) at a typical salary. So it should be fairly widely
accessible.

I've been to Germany 5 times, but I've never met more Germans than
when I was on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Give 'em credit, they
know a bargain.

when I was on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Give 'em credit, they

I tried and looked up the advertisements in today's Stockholm paper.
Most charter destinations for sunshine seem to be Tenerife,Gran Canaria,
Egypt (red sea), Thailand,Dominican Republic, Madeira and Brazil (Recife).
I would estimate Canary Islands to be the most popular and then Thailand.
That's for the winter months, later in season Mallorca,Costa del Sol,Turkey
and Greek Islands are the most likely destinations.
Florida used to be a destination for charter flights but ceased with the
high dollar rate, maybe back again if the weaker dollar rate continues.
With scheduled flights there are arrangements for virtually any area in the
world as we are, together with Germany,Netherlands and our fellow
Scandinavians the most travelling people in the world.

I've been to Guadeloupe and Martinique and if I believed in heaven, I'd
have to think it couldn't be any better than this. Great beaches,
wonderful scenery, terrific food, and everything moving slowly, on
"island time". Interestingly, Travelocity shows that it's cheaper to
fly there from France than from the U S. Spain and Italy aren't all
that warm in the winter, are they? A hell of a lot warmer than here in
Massachusetts, that's for sure, but not exactly lying on the beach warm?

Driving around Oz in a motorhome in summer (northern winter) I meet
lots of Brits, Swedes and Germans in the caravan parks. In fact, one
of the more popular rental companies is called Britz - although
they're usually rented by Germans.

While warmer than Sweden, Florida weather isn't reliable December through
about the start of March IMO. And that's the southern-most part of the
state. Maybe your Swedes have figured that out.
I've seen snowflakes in north Florida in December. I've seen ice on puddles
at Melbourne, FL, in December. I've seen it just above freezing at the beach
near Tampa in December. I've seen daytime highs below 20 C (68 F) in Key
West on both my trips there. In short, more than half my winter trips to
Florida have been COLD.

I haven't been in Italy in the winter, but the south of Spain is definitely
not beach warm. Only t-shirt warm for a couple hours a day, and only if
you're walking around, not sitting down.

I haven't been in Italy in the winter, but the south of Spain is definitely
not beach warm. Only t-shirt warm for a couple hours a day, and only if
you're walking around, not sitting down.

Well, there is always Cuba ;-)
And friends who just got back from Puerto Vallarta Mexico said it was
*sweltering* there......

Well, there is always Cuba ;-)
And friends who just got back from Puerto Vallarta Mexico said it was
