Why don't they just label each door with a penis or a vagina?

The penis symbol wouldn't *have* to be circumcized.

That's what I thought they'd done- and I was veering towards the
triangle (equilateral pointing downwards) being the female symbol for a
while. Eventually, I said nah, can't be what I think it is, and opened
the door discretely- the urinals in immediate view confirming it was the
male toilet.

The crapper.
Popular wisdom attributes this to Thomas Crapper, who is
sometimes described as the inventor of the flush toilet. This
is a myth. He held patents for improvements such as the
floating ballcock, but none were for the flush toilet itself.
The manhole covers with Crapper's company's name on
them in Westminster Abbey are a minor tourist attraction. =R=

Way back when the man and woman silhouettes were first becoming
the standard designation for toilets/WCs/restrooms/bathrooms,
Playboy magazine had a cartoon showing two doors bearing those
signs, with a Greek soldier headed for the symbol wearing a skirt
while a woman in slacks headed for the other.

It's still in use in its other sense, although not as common as
at one time.

Maybe, but that still isn't enough to make it a euphemism.

Jim.

Ive seen a nut and a bolt in UK, perhaps we should have photos or
models of genetalia on the doors to avoid any confusion?
