Interesting. I thought all the price lists were placed outside the
restaurants?

That is my recollection too.
I found several other articles in the DT that are near fiction, but nothing up
to the standard of the First Post, which seems to be running a vendetta against
the parents of the girl who disappeared in Portugal. If the First Post is wrong
I hope the parents take the DT to the cleaners for libel.

I'm not sure. There were definitely prices outside in Venice, but I can't recall
prices outside the places where I used to eat in N Italy and Rome.
Maybe the journalist googled the wrong Venice, before writing the in depth
report?

They were all made against a deranged American trying to charge them for

Well... err... it could be, but laws are frequently ignored in Italy.
I don't know how much effort the Venetian authorities make to ensure
tourists are treated fairly. Given my experience, it's minimal, even
in the north of the country.

"Maria Tosi, who runs a tobacconist, said tourists could do simple
things to try to get a better price such as saying hello when entering
a shop or restaurant, or learning a few words of Venetian dialect."
It's sad but true. Learning just a few words in the local dialect can
make a big difference in Italy. Personally I don't know any Venetian,
but I will make an effort to learn it if I return.
Certainly learning basic Genovese has served me very well here.

Herself and I are not paranoid (well, I think we are not). We are
aware that some people see tourists as easy prey for ripoffs, so we
pay some attention to posted prices and to the calculation of bills.
We found price information everywhere we went in Venice, and there was
no funny business in making up our bills. The prices were generally
very high, but that's another question.

Yes, we're a bit like that too. You should have seen us at M&S earlier
this afternoon scanning the till's display to make sure we got the
discounts!

For Italy, maybe, but not for the UK, and not for Dublin either in our
