Sunrise at Stonehenge?

Are there any early moning trips from London to Stonehenge and back? I'd
like to go to Stonehenge early in the morning to get some nice photos for an
hour or so, then head back to London the same morning to have the rest of
the day still available in London.

Stonehenge is up to 3 hours from London, around 90 miles, so to get a
sunrise there at this time of year would be quite an adventure. But apart
from that I don't know the answer to your question, just a hunch that it'd
be tricky to organise with most coach operators.

As part of an Oxford University archaeology course some years ago, our
lecturer arranged for us to have a private dawn visit to Stonehenge. The
skies were clear, and it was a simply magical experience wandering around
the stones as the sun rose over the horizon. Suggest you check out the
English Heritage website for details of private visits.

Factor in English weather. It's likely to be cold, grey, and
unphotoworthy. How close can you get to the stones anyway?

Well the first (direct) train out of London (Waterloo) that stops at
Salisbury is the 7:10 arriving about an hour and a half later.. add to
that a half hour taxi journey and I think you may miss the sunrise...
Still realistically you could be back in London by midday... but it
would be a very long tiring day..
Check http://www.nationalrail.co.uk
and click on 'plan my journey'.

You can always add the sun with Paintshop Pro :-)

I forgot to mention, this is for late June, so the I am going to expect
wonderful weather.
If sunrise isn't practical, then at least the earliest available trip there
and back.
I do not want to make a full day out of the Stonehenge trip.

Most organized tours to Stonehenge from London seem to start at about 9am,
which is a bit later than you want. You would have to go with a "private
tour" where you could probably have a much better chance of changing the
departure time, but they would be expensive. For example, using google I
found http://www.cruising-america.com/londontours/tour3.html
and they charge 245pounds for a Salisbury and Stonehenge tour for "1-3
persons in a large car".

3 hours - are you sure? I used to work in Andover and commute from
Teddington everyday - it took no longer than 1 and 15 minutes - although I
was moving it a bit ;-).
Could always get off the M3 at Basingstoke/Fleet/Woking and get a train -
from Woking you can get a fast train to Waterloo and it only takes 25 mins.

Stay overnight at a B&B in Salisbury (a town worth visiting in its own
right, imo) and get a taxi early morning from there?

When I was a student I went to the summer solstice twice. I wouldn't
go out of my way to visit it at sunrise by my self.

I was there at sunrise a long tome ago. This was when they only had a
little step-over fence surrounding the stones.
I went to a particularly, er, relaxed, party in Salisbury and we all drove
up there pre-dawn and tumbled out onto the (other)grass and watched the sun
come up between the stones. Wonderful it was. Very tree-huggingly moving.

depends on time of day, if you hit the rush hours it may take a
long time. Before dawn in summer, an hour.

As a landscape photographer I can confirm you wont guarantee good
shots in UK by a single scheduled visit. Also check when dawn
actually is in summer! The pay off is that clouds make for great
photos when they work out well, check the weather forecast!
