It's about the only thread on which people of different political
orientations find agreement. Yves has accomplished something.

There is always a tinpot martinet or two who wants to barrel onto a
newsgroup and "run" things. Remember Sheryl Mexic on rec.travel.air?
There are plenty of moderated boards on which to discuss travel, e.g. such
places as http://www.flyertalk.com , the boards at lonelyplanet, fodors,
etc.
I'd suggest the OP set up a Yahoo! group or some such. That way he can
"moderate" to his heart's delight.

Lol...Evelyn, I find it rather "amusing" that you seem to engage these
"trolls" by responding to virtually every post that they make.....
And it leads me to wonder "Who is *really* the 'troll'...???"
I guess it keeps you busy, in any case.

Usenet is supposed to be about fun. For many of us, it is an amusing
diversion from the vagaries of daily life.
We all have enough "rules" in our day - to - day lives. Being on Usenet
should not be like a job or a task, with a million tetchy little
restrictions, "rules", and little dictators ready to pounce.....
I post on Usenet and also on a number of moderated boards. They both have
their places. Let Usenet be Usenet. There are plenty of "moderated" spaces
(including on Usenet) if one wishes to cut down on one's particular S/N
ratio.....

Thank you. I've always thought it silly for people to be complaining about
"OT" posts, "trolls", etc. on Usenet. For all the time it takes to write a
whining post, one can kill threads, posters, subjects, etc. by judicious use
of filtering.

The it.* hierarchy is organized by a group (GCN) of volontaries coming
mainly from universities, ISPs and telecoms, and their rules are very
strict. Of course the rules are dimensioned to the Italian situation.
The traffic is considered acceptable under GCN rules (the minimum being
300 posts/months); if you don't like the GCN rules, nobody forces you to
have the it.* hierarchy on your news server: you simply forget about it
on your news server. Provided you have a news server - relevant judgment
on these matters comes from news servers administrators, not from users.

Shall I fire up a NNTP daemon on my server so that I can be a News Server
Administrator, too?

War spam is certainly dying down. And with a little more assiduity
(hint hint to all), we can make the commercial spammers less welcome.
