For some reason, Earthlink's dial-up service in Arizona
seems to provide a maximum of 26.4k (that's not my
computer's fault - I got 56k easily enough in California).
There are times I regret moving here. I thought the cost of
living was less, but it turns out to be not that much less.
Also, not being a church-goer, I'm finding it difficult to
meet people, so I'm lonely. (And simply attending church
isn't the answer, since I haven't much in common with the
folks who do.) Although I have a widowed brother who has a
winter home here, he also has a new girlfriend. (I'm cool
with that, she's of an appropriate age and my kind of
people, but they both enjoy travel - Vegas, Laughlin, etc. -
so aren't home much even when they're theoretically living
here.)
However, "regrets" or not, I'm stuck with it - I can't
afford to move back again, which I realized would be the
case, before I left California. (I've been here less than a
year, so hopefully in time I'll find more interesting things
to do - once I accustom myself to two months or more of
outdoor temperatures over 100+ Fahrenheit!)

When I lived in London, BT kindly screwed up my telephone line, and I
dropped from 56k to half that. The radio service will be workable at
your speed- not optimal, but you'll hear it OK.

Oh- sorry about that.

What about other social groups? In Philadelphia, for a while I was a
member of a "salon"- comprised of Utne Reader readers. That was fun.
There are bound to be some people share your opera interests- maybe an
opera listening group, sharing rare performances/dvds etc.

Did you notice this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/6277422.stm
"We are upgrading the technical quality of the video on the site for
users overseas so that anyone anywhere in the world with a high speed
internet connection can watch the BBC's news reports in broadband
quality.
Until now this has only been possible for users in the UK - server costs
have restricted us from providing the same level of service
internationally.
We did not want the BBC's UK licence fee payers meeting this cost and in
effect subsidising the service for people outside the UK.
Now, with the help of our partners in BBC World, the BBC's commercially
funded international TV news channel, we are making our broadband video
news service available internationally.
BBC World is funded by advertising and subscription revenue and the cost
of the improved video service will be met by advertising around the
broadband news clips.
So if you are viewing video from outside the UK you may see a short
commercial before your clip plays."
etc.

I'll drink champagne with anything.
I do have to add that my sister was serving champagne with shepherds pie
long before Archer publicised his own taste for nursery food in the grossest
possible way...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

I didn't. Thanks. Last time round the implication was that people like Evelyn
and I would fund it. Over my dead body :-)
So they were lying when they told people it was a copyright problem.

Could have been in some cases, actually, and the advertising revenue
might fix some of that?

That's what I meant! BBC World is sort-of commercial.

We have BBC World on the cable. There is no way I would pay for it.
If the FO isn't running & paying it somebody in the BBC needs shooting.
