This is not the airline, it's ground handling.

The fact that it's a good idea to avoid Warsaw (and hence LOT)
and that it's probably indicative of the overall Polish service.

As for the check in no doubt the airline is responsible as they either do
that service themselves or , more likely for a foreign airport, they're
buying the service from a ground service company.
As for security it's many times possible for the airlines to buy a special
better service for their passengers. Many times a such service is available
for passengers in business class.
Don't know if that's possible in Warsaw though.

I went with LOT twice - new airplanes, but crew a little bit rough.
Okecie airport in Warsaw is really small - it has only some 10 gates

Just give locks to the security guys - they do the job and then lock
the suitcase. Works all the time.

I always fly from O'Hare and I have never had to wait more than
20-30 min (except for EL AL which was another horrendous
experience). Obviously shit happens and for some reason or
another every company may have a problem once in a while
but when I asked Polish guy sitting next to me if these lines are
typical, he said that he flies twice a year and there are *always*
lines like this. I contend that *no* American airline *always*
has mile-long queues.

BTW, the flight Vienna-Warsaw was OK - despite it's being
operated by LOT. If I don't count lost baggage, that it.

I've stood close to this in a line at Baltimore for a Southwest Flight.

And Americans lived in peace together for thousands of years, to develop
what you call "customer service"?

This hasn't been my experience at all. I'd rate LOT as better than BA
but worse than, say, Emirates.

I also recently flew with their low cost spinoff centralwings, and they
seemed OK by low-cost standards, certainly better than ryanair.

WAW is being upgraded at the moment, with extensive building work, and
is a tad chaotic as a result.

I agree about Finnair. Finnair's flight attendants were some of the
friendliest ones I have met.

Your mileage may vary :-)

As you wrote yourself you had choosen LOT because the price was
competitive on this particular route [Chicago-(Warsaw-)Vienna]. It is up
to you to decide if the savings were worth "the extras" using *YOUR*
standards [I was not there].

Nobody can force you to choose LOT next time. You may try more costly
alternatives if you wish. As you read in the thread some people have
aquired "anonimosities" to other airlines too.

Next time you may write "hate post" [strong "do not use" recomendation]
about another airline ;-)

P.S. I hope that your experience was not typicall and LOT no longer
translates into (I hope ancient) "a Lot Of Troubles" for many customers.

They are indicative of airlines with problems who have inadequate
staffing levels for the service demands.

My worst checkin experience in recent memory was trying to get out of
Vienna one morning. Lufthansa I think was the culprit. Vienna was
worse than Cairo.

All checkin comments are separate from security check rants please.

Star alliance position on Eastern Europe is extremely strong: Lufthansa +
Swiss + LOT + Austrian.

By comparison, Skyteam has Air France + KLM + CSA (+ Aeroflot), but that
doesn't match quite the huge STAR network there! And LOT turning to STAR
has led to AF ending the codeshare agreement on Paris-Warsaw and Paris-
Krakow :-( now there's only Skyeurope on the route... I won't count Wizz
since they fly to Beauvais, the French middle-of-nowhere airport.

Oneworld can just rely on BA (Finnair isn't really helpful).

Star could "drop" LOT and keep supremacy over Eastern Europe. I suspect
they'll keep it, though - LOT isn't really strong enough to survive on
its own, even with the high-yield routes to Canada and the US.

By the way, they still haven't decided which plane to buy...

I remember the search in Krakow airport in 1990 just before boarding a
LOT Tupolev-134... I was deterred from bringing scissors inside because I
could have "cut the curtains" :-)))

It was a MEMORABLE flight, for I was invited in the deck and had a glance
through the glass nose... Man I miss those Tupolevs, so elegant planes!
OK they were noisy and uncomfortable... but so stylish!

I also flew LOT Antonov 24s and Tu-154s. Always fantastic experience!

The Boeing 737 from Paris to Krakow in 1999 was somewhat boring in
comparison... but the service was very good, and vodka better than on Air
France!
