We didn't stay there, but it has to be one of the most impressive youth
hostels I've ever seen, at least from the outside. (Castle on a hill
overlooking Bacharach and the Rhein.)

AFAIR there's an old Hitler Youth amphitheatre still in use, not for
rallies, immediately above the Lorelei and an associated youth hostel
nearby. There's a very impressive view from near the amphitheatre.
My favourite castle on a hill in the Rhine Valley is Marksburg, they
is also a very nice wine festival held in the village at the bottom of
the hill, in autumn every year.

The Marksurg is my favorite Rhein castle, too. It's one of the few that
haven't been horribly modernized.

But Stahleck is also gorgeous from the river and the river is gorgeous
from there 8-) And you can stay IN it overnight, which you can't do in
the Marksburg. There are also several youth hostels on the Rhein NEAR
castles.

I believe the OP tried and could not get a reservation at Burg STahlek.
Do you know what other towns, or what other hostels there are?

Well, they are all listed on the DJH site, of course, but how much is in
English I don't know, as I always use it as is, in German. I've stayed
in castle youth hostels in many parts of Germany over the years. Long
ago I stayed in one below Rheinfels(St. Goar) and one in Ruedisheim.
There's another in a castle on the same bank as Bacharach, but I'm
blanking on the name at the moment. More recently I've been exploring
castle youth hostels in other parts of Germany; there are quite a few.
However, when I want to stay in one of them, I make my reservations many
months ahead of time. It took me two tries a couple years apart to get a
room in Burg Blankenheim.

So which do ou particularly like? I'm headed to Germany in the fall, I have
my hostel card in hand, and I'll be around for 9 weeks. While I have classes
during the day, I'd love to find some really cool places to visit on weekends.

Look at the Cave Annex for descriptions of some I've visited in the last
few years--this one is a bit choppy, but the individual pieces load
fairly fast:
http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~erilarlo/trip01A.html
and follow the chapters. I haven't checked the links lately, but some
should still be good, and you'll learn more about the ones I've visited
than the website for the DJH.
I didn't stay in as many hostels on the 2003 trip:
http://www.airstreamcomm.net/~erilarlo/trip03A.html
but I didn't chop it into as many chapters.

I'll be 71 by the time I go back again, and I'm spoiling myself by
staying in more hotels nowadays 8-)

A few notes from the '97 and '99 trips I took down to make room for the
later ones: ('97 was when my daughter, her two children, and I spent a
month in Germany; Stahleck was the only castle hostel we stayed in that
trip)

JH Eisenach "Artur Becker" in Mariental is more or less at the foot of
the Wartburg.

The youth hostel in Heldrungen is a castle surrounded by a moat.

Burg Ludwigstein is a big one up on a hill and lovely even in February
8-)

This may be good: http://www.die-pfalz.com/burgen/burgen/trifels.htm
but it's old. I particularly wanted to visit Trifels, so I stayed in
the hostel across the valley above Annweiler and could see it from my
room.
