And as far as Highway Signs go I would say most all of them have
English equivalents.

Either Greek and English on the same sign or a Greek sign followed by a
English sign alittle farther down the road.

I lived outside Athens in the early 70's and even back then the major
and minor roads had English signs. But 'off the beaten track' they were
usually in Greek only. Regards, Walter

I would agree with that, but suggest another itinerary to consider,
which is to go from the airport to Rafina and from there take the
ferry to Andros (don't miss the wonderful art gallery there, with its
Degas "little ballerina") and onwards to Mykonos. Andros is
_relatively_ quiet, and Mykonos is certainly not, but is fantastically
beautiful and allows a day-trip to Dilos.

Make credence recognised that on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 08:51:38 -0700,
"Mimi" <[email protected]> has scripted:

After learning the Russian alphabet, the Greek one is easy. Heaps of
the characters are the same!

FWIW, I think everyone should learn the Russian alphabet, coz it takes
only a little time, and is useful for life. Definitely as useful as
learning Roman numerals, which most people are taught.

Oh yes of course! There are many other possibilities. I've never actually
been to Andros - it's one of those 'forgotten' islands. Maybe next year. Next
month I'm planning to drive to Evia which is another one off the beaten
track.

July 2006. The locals I'm talking about are shop-keepers,
hoteliers, public servants (railway employees etc) and
similar. The people themselves were marvellous, as were
nearly all the people we met in every country in the world
that we travelled through.

Having been in France only weeks before I did use the
limited French I know (bonjour, merci beaucoup, parlais
Anglais? etc) with a smile when making contact, but the
response was often surly and incomprehensible - until they
noticed my accent. Then suddenly things would improve. It
was quite amazing how different things would be after that
moment of recognition. Maybe the problem is not an antipathy
to English speakers but to near-neighbour English speakers.

I resurrected my Aussie cap from the luggage and things
improved:-)

Of course, the first thing we noticed was that all of the
signs (even billboards) were monolingual, much more so than
Paris where at least some are bi- or multi-lingual.

Cheers, Alan, Australia

I went there ages ago. At the time it was a bit out of the way, but
maybe transport has improved. Used to be an "exile" island for
political prisoners. We stayed in a village on the NE coast whose name
escapes me, though I can picture the beach. The bus ride to get there
was a bit hair-raising - hairpins with steep drops, and the driver
conversing animatedly with a passenger behind him.

Ages ago I made plans to spend a week there, then had to put them aside, but I still want
to. Apart from the crazy chauffeurs, how is it landscape-wise? Nice walks?

Yes - we spent some time hiking away from the coast. We only had a
"tourist map", so got hopelessly lost, but enjoyed it a lot. Looking
at a map I now see that the place we stayed was called Armenistis
which at the time was the end of the universe. Further on there were
beaches and campings populated by hippies and such-like. Now there is
probably a Club Med :-)

Google Earth is not sharp at all but the website does not mention Club Med, thank heavens!
Apparently they have visitors from the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria, though... Thank
you, I'm putting Ikaria on the table once more.

I think that sort of Club Med died some time ago, perhaps the whole company?

Where there are Dutch, there are Dutch krokets and a three week supply of
boterham.
