They go together like the proverbial horse and carriage.

But in my Berlin apartment there will also be some good ham, some
decent Emmental, some Pumpernickel and/or Vollkornbrot, some yoghurt,
some fresh fruit, decent coffee......

I would say that in the years I've been here, I've never seen a bad
comment about Berlin. Can't think of another place that fits the bill.

Quite sensible expatriates have gone back to UK because they couldn't take

I may be doing some language teaching (amongst other things) over
there, but the local English Language Teachers Association has good
advice about tax returns and other such gut-wrenching matters and run
a series of workshops to help people deal with it all.

I remember the last time I worked there for a German company, rushing
around from the place to place to get a stamp from the Finanzamt
saying I'd paid my taxes .... and then going to another Amt on the
other side of the city to get some of that tax refunded....and then
somewhere else besides. Still, I survived to tell the tale!

Problem is my favourite country is different at various times in the year.
I am incredibly fortunate to be retired in Scotland so no deadly rush hour
commuting I can enjoy the Edinburgh Festival and now the temperature is high
and soon it will be daylight till 10pm.
The stunningly beautifull west coast becons me back.
This year I am going to cycle all of the Hebridean islands.Just need a
window of 4 dry windless days!!.There are no midges in June or September out
there.
Thanks to all these cheap flights anyone can be in the heart of the
Highlands in no time flat.
My favourite memory is racing the steam train from Mallaig to Fort
William(40 miles) while towing my caravan. One of the most stunningly
beautifull train journeys-well as good as the Orient Express from Berlin to
Prague up the river valley.
Spring in Berlin takes some beating I ve been going there for years it still
takes my breath away riding on my recumbent trike listening to Pink Floyd on
the new fangled MP3 player- catching a doner in deep Krausberg for 1.5
euros.Just being part of the cafe life-magic.
Gomera Valle Gran Rey was my favourite winter holiday but thanks to advice
on this board I have discovered Andalucia and the Alpuharras- I have died
and gone to heaven- well without my trike-the gradients are steep and
steeper.
I like the USA- but- being almost shot dead twice its put me off a
bit-that-and the kids at the camp site near Orlando shooting at their coke
cans with real guns!
Unfortunately? I cannot travel in 3rd world countries as I need access to
first class medical back up-neuron disease- so favourites are going to have
to be within 4 hours in the plane from now on.

Well, I live in the USA and don't like it--nearly being shot by LA
police didn't help. I was carrying home a plastic "pirate" pistol from
Disneyland, having been dropped off a couple of blocks from my home
(the thing looked cartoonish, not real at all) and was waylaid by
screaming (PUT IT DOWN! PUT IT DOWN!) LA cops with pistols and
shotguns, screeching high-speed squad car/searchlights kind of stuff.
Kind of funny but they told me I came within an inch of being shot.
Nervous as hell cops. Shoot first types, stiff crewcut martinets.
Didn't like the look of all those shaking barrels pointed my way. I
know, I know, someone here is going to tell me I shouldn't have been
carrying a Tom-and-Jerry-style blunderbuss publically because someone
would call the cops, but how anyone could consider a brightly colored
plastic mini-cartoon thing a threat like that...just beggars the
imagination. Forerunners of today's airport security, I suppose.

Did get shot by hunters, this being the gun-happy USA. Small public
lake, they were shooting at ducks flying over, I was on the other
side. No big problem because I was wearing a jacket, but the pellets
left dents in it. Nice shooting chums. Still, not everyone can say
they've been shot by shotguns and survived. Lucky the damn stuff spent
most of its momentum before it hit me.

Of course, this being the USA, have had my share of getting mugged.
Was pickpocketed once in San Francisco and carried the bellowing
pickpocket into a restaurant. That got everyone's attention. But I'm
sorry to report that I wasn't asked back.

Great wine? Great fruity whites, yes.

BTW, another good place for castles is Spain. (or even Wales).

Nice mountains.

funnily enough that happened to me in UK. However, a phone call
elicited police with dogs (and I assume armed response) within 10
minutes and I wasn't even on a public road. They took it *very*
seriously.

The police in the UK take every report of a firearm seriously.

Which is why they're dead scared that one day they're going to shoot dead a
child with a toy gun.

A couple of years ago they had a close encounter here with a twelve year old
shooting his new 'soft air gun', that looked incredibly like the real
thing, out of the upstairs window of a small hotel.

Luckily nobody was hurt, but the event concentrated some minds and inspired
the legislation, currently under review in the UK, to ban replica guns.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
