Default English Farm infected with foot-and-mouth

Animals on a farm near Guildford in Surrey have been found to be
infected with foot-and-mouth disease.

A 3km protection zone has been put in place around the premises and a
UK ban imposed on movement of all livestock.

Don't they vaccinate the cattle? or don't they panic and just keep quiet
about it?

Europe?

Lazy farmers.
Bad farming practice.
Incompetent buffoons supervising the inbred farming community.

Most farmers would never mention the possibility of FMD on their
farms, it only comes out when they are caught out (rarely). Now we
shall see a spate of FMD as examinations are stepped up and more
people are being caught. Too late then. Go veggie.

Yep - just a 5 minute drive from me. I know the farm.
But instant action nation-wide - Northern Ireland ports closed, agricultural
shows as far away as Scotland cancelled.
Local radio reports bloody idiots ignoring protection zone & police coming
in to sort it.

There are periodic outbreaks in mainland Europe too, but the UK has more
livestock than most countries I believe.

importing beef from countries with endemic FMD is probably one thing which
marks us out

No, most countries do. Where do you think corned beef comes from...the bully
beef of WW1 and WW2 fame?

Disinformation from a paid agent of the Country Land and Business
Association yet again. They want Britons to pay premium prices for British
produce - from a country riddled with animal disease and an appalling record
for handling epidemics - Britain.

Any logical process will quickly show the fallacy of their arguments.
According to the Farmers Guardian (Webster writes for this extremely
xenophobic publication), internationally FMD moves in infected food,
nationally it moves in live animals.

Yeah ! Clever virus than can spot international frontiers. Pull the other
one Webster. You caused enough trouble during the last epidemic. This time -
no chance. I was interested to see that others elsewhere are sceptical about
your contribution to animal health and international relations.

You will not get a free run this time. Take my advice - head down.

FMD is now considered to have been eradicated in the EU, with new outbreaks
being linked to imported animals. Therefore, preventative vaccination was
abandoned, as a matter of EU policy, because of the difficulty in
differentiating between vaccinated and infected cattle, which could mask the
presence of a new outbreak. It is now only approved as a control procedure -
ring vaccination around an infected area. Prior to the 2001 outbreak, there
was not enough data available to create meaningful computer models of the
spread of the disease. Data gathered during that outbreak makes ring
vaccination a viable prospect this time.

A. Because it is a form of composition which makes a post illogical.

Q. Why should you not top-post?

I think you might be right on this one. Always tempting to blame the
outsiders.

Personal to my friends

I'm having a really terrible time.

It seems that we have avian flu here. I'm pretty sure it is linked to pigs
and circovirus.

One day I well tell you the full story, God willing.

Meantime, I will keep on-line as long as I can and move to other 'puters
and lines as I have to.

I really do have pancreatic cancer and it is pretty tough. Check the
stats - 91 percent die within 16 weeks of diagnosis: most of the rest soon
after.

I'm now in the last couple of per cent and intend to say there - as you
would expect. Remission is just about possible. But the day to day
problems are pretty rough.

Frankly, if they arrest me, I will be dead within 48 hours. I need drugs
and TLC.

Mrs Pat is completely frantic. A decent woman is scared stiff in her own
homeamd not for the first time. That is not England is it?

If I go missing, start raising hell. Don't delay
01986 788698 will get you Mrs Pat.... if not panic

Regard
Pat Gardiner
