no, that only happens in third world type places. In Europe the
disease has generally been erradicated, outbreaks are dealt with by
culling. If you vacinate its not possible to be sure if the disease is
present.

Chief veterinary officer Debby Reynolds said flooding may have been
the source of the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The outbreak in 2001 led to between 6.5 million and 10 million animals
being destroyed and cost as much as £8.5bn.

On Tuesday 7th August 2007 a Defra spokesman said laboratory results
showed foot-and-mouth at the second site, not far from the first
infected location, Wolford farm, near Guildford.

Thanks, Jim. Looks like you're right. Loseley House say they're outside
the killing zone anyway.

See http://www.loseley-park.com/FootandMouth.asp

Director of Communications ruled during last outbreak that the DEFRA
song sheet should refer to 'culled' not 'slaughter' or 'killing. One
wonders how many editors, worried about their lobby favours, will toe
the party line.

I suspect that depending upon the period you reenact, slaugher or killing
might be more appropriate ;-)
Anyway hope it is a good weekend for people down there

Sounds like an opportunity not to be wasted. The officials doing
the cull could all dress up in Viking-period HAZMAT suits, pillage
and burn in the appropriately period way, and torch Pirbright for
a grand finale. Perhaps Merial's staff could be sold to the Moors
as harem girls, eunuch servants and galley slaves to defray expenses.

Sounds like that last one was the culprit in this case.

James,
I'm surprised you didn't drop the dictionary definition of "cull" in
here. (I'm sure you know it!)

Culling involves selection within herd, flock etc. That doesn't fit here.

And here was me thinking it was a bunch employed by a US research company in
a US managed establishment...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
