I must say that from the point of view of the tourist one off no cars
days are bloody stupid. OK, have pedestrianised areas or whatever you
want in the way of traffic control schemes, but permenent so we know
where we stand.
If your touring with a car full of luggage, turning up at a town and
finding it closed to cars for one day is ridiculous and inconsiderate.
Anybody know what happens in practice? Are visitors to hotels, people
moving house etc etc given exemption? Where do visitors park? Are
there park and rides or something?
If Spain ever goes this way, I dont fancy finding myself stranded a
the city gates when all I want to do is park in the garage, unload and
then forget about the car.
I think if I hadnt been forewarned, I would just blow my top and turn
round.

No big deal for the small business owners either as they just *love* these
car free days when turnover is up to three times as high as on days that
exhaust fumes pollute the city center.
We should make all historic city centers car free. Deliveries will be
allowed between say 7 AM and 10 AM, ambulances/fire brigade/ police and
small electric cars for handicapped people will be allowed in, and everybody
else can walk, bike or use public transport.

On the last annual European car-free Sunday, I spent a few minutes at
the Brussels city limits on one major radial road (near the NATO HQ).
Incoming traffic was stopped at a (temporary) checkpoint, and most
vehicles returned towards their point of origin. I did not see any special
'park and ride' facilties, but there may have been some elsewhere. But,
as there are already far too many cars here I don't have one (just a
driving licence), and I appreciated the exceptional lack of motorised
traffic.
Anyway, if you want to avoid the risk of inadvertently having to change
your travel plans - or to see how you can take advantage of this
initiative - you should visit the European Mobility Week website :
