Default Driving in Cities on Sunday

I heard that some European politicians rammed through some law saying people
must not use their cars in cities on Sunday.
Now I am not sure if one of my friends is playing some cruel little Hitler joke
on me or if this is really true. Not even sure if the politicians were playing
an "April Fools' Day" on the people. Stranger things have happened, although I
can't think of any at the moment.
But, being the Devils advocate.. if it is true, does this affect tourists? What
about cars with foreign plates? Are there any exceptions of do they just
confiscate ones car and crush it, LOL.
Sorry for the nature of this question but I am not sure if one of my practical
joker friends is pulling my leg or he's being serious for a change.
Thanks for any and all information.

In Florence Sunday is the only day you can access the centre by car
without an authorization. But every now and then there is an "ecologic
Sunday" during which traffic is restricted (usually from 10.30 am to 6
pm). Some exceptions are made (for example people working on Sunday),
but I don't remember any for tourists. If you get caught you get a fine
on the spot.

Many Dutch cities have one car-free Sunday per year. Wonderful to be able to
walk and bike without the normal exhaust fumes, dangers and noises of car
travel.

Rammed through?
London has one once a year, I dont think its compulsory, though. You
do pay a £5 a day charge Monday-Friday[1] to drive in the central area
(the bit tourists go to) However as parking is £1 for 20 minutes IIRC
in that area, taxi/train/walk are better anyway. (You could walk
across the £5 zone in a couple of hours easily). I have never come
across car free Sundays in Spain but in the parts of Spanish cities
most interesting to the tourist the car is a lousy way of getting
around.

1] the Mayor, Ken Livingstone was elected on a platform of introducing
congestion charging (although many voted for him on the basis that
Margeret Thatcher threw him out and abolished the Greater London
Council and took great pleasure in saying "Up yours Maggie, you old
bag, we'll have Ken back, thank you" :-))

April Fool.
Yes it has happened occasionally, but normally only in the course of special
circumstances such as an "anti-pollution week" or such.
Back in the UK there were traffic-free days during the oil crisis. But that
doesn't really count.

I took offence at the "rammed through " bit as well.
Obviously an American point of view. (ohmigod, we can't use our cars,
WHATAREWEGONNADO?) :-)
You'll probably find that events like this where they occur are particularly
popular.

Well, yes, I wouldn't want one every day, or every week.
But there's a fairly widespread green-ish point of view amongst the general
German and Austrian population, at least, where that sort of thing is
generally well accepted, if it's not done too often.

gtting the balance right.

Well, I don't know what others are going to do but I will just avoid cities
during that time.
That's too bad, not necessarily for me as there are plenty of things to do int
he countryside but for the small businesses that would be the recipient of
tourism money.
They make their choices and I make mine.
No big deal either way.
Cheers,
Ron

Yes, unless you're staying at a hotel in the city and are lugging 3 weeks worth
of luggage and packages on public transportation.
I think this might be nice for the locals but for those who travel I would
rather avoid the problem by staying and going elsewhere.
I get to the UK quite often and need a car. I use to go into Mayfair and visit
some friends and do some shopping. Now, I let them drive out to me and I buy
things elsewhere. I will say it has helped me save money in that regard. The
Hotels are less expensive and so are the goods in the stores.
There are some very good local theaters on the outskirts anyway.
But with the high, compared to the USA, price of petrol it equals out. I spend
the same amount of money, it just goes to BP rather than some shop.
Thanks
Suzn

Mike:
Yes, my name is Ron Carbookie, I'm American of Scottish heritage.
I'm not quite sure what you find so humorous of that but please share it with
everyone so we all may join in.
Would you make fun of someone's name if they were from Africa, how about Poland
or Germany?
Cheers,
Ron Carbookie

Catch a cab, or combine the tube and a cab, or even better, get a backpack!

Sorry, I thought it was a indication you wrote car books rather than
your name and were therefore biased towards cars. Nothing humourous
intended at all.

nope, you will note my name "Reid" is Scottish too (at least the
spelling is), although we have been English for a few generations.
