Same near where I live, but actually, in the centre of Manchester, I
can't think of one off-hand, and anyway 'on the high street' is a figure
of speech, as you know.

Wouldn't the requisite phrase for Brits be "in the High Street"?
"On Main Street" would be an Americanism.

I certainly think David H was right, "on the high street" is what I'd
use too. I wouldn't say it was an ameircanism.

"on the high street" is fine, but both are used, though google, that
great scientific tool, would seem to sugest that "on" is more commonly
used. Jim was being pedantic.

Can't you tell us what happened to the lorry? I'm back in Leiden on
Monday, and I'm wondering if I could check it out still?
Jim.

Around 17:30 yesterday they used a very large crane to lift the front
part of the artic up whilst a breakdown truck pulled the whole thing
backwards. The show has finished.
Yesterday evening, we went to the Italian restaurant Porto Pino
http://www.leidslekkers.nl/pagina/recensie/20 that I recommended to
you. It is still good although you need to be very hungry to eat the
vast quantity of food that they put in front of you.
